Quality
Well for all of those interested in buying a quality used car here DO NOT!!! You would be very interested in how this company reconditions its inventory. They instruct their associates to rush through the "150 point" inspection on their "quality" used car. Let me ask you this how can you safely check out a vehicle in a matter of 15-20 minutes. I dont know about you, but I would never purchase a used vehicle and place my family in it that has only had 15-20 minutes worth of inspection. This company has a quota to "construct" over 200 cars per week for its customers. I went to test drive two cars on the lot and two did not even start for the sales associate. The third had badly worn tires on the edges. According to the sales associate this was ok because it was up to "CarMax Standards". I was very suprised that the sales associate was very quick to provide me with all of the details on just how they recondition their cars. A 150 point inspection is done by an hourly associate that should be changing oil. WOW! Any hard problems with the cars are sent to the local area dealers (I was surpised when I also heard that their service department does the same). Did you know that they have a body shop on site? I guess selling vehicles that have been involved in an accident is ok for CarMax to do. Wait...they have a picture of a wrecked vehicle on their showroom floor that states they would never sell a wrecked car. WOW! Well I could not even find any literature on what exactly "CarMax Standards" are. So I thought that I might have better luck at another one of CarMax's stores. NOT!!! I went to the store located in Woodbridge and went to test drive two cars. You guessed it one had the engine light on and the other had the ABS light on. No way am I going to buy a car from this company. No way am I going to refer any family or friends to this company. I beg you DO NOT GO TO CARMAX...THE VEHICLES THAT THEY SELL ARE NOT SAFE!!!

LIES & SCAMS!
CarMax is horrible, horrible, horrible! They lied to me and treated me very rudely.

Recently, my 5-year old truck broke down. It needed major engine repair. Instead of fixing it, I decided to sell it and buy a newer truck. I called CarMax and spoke to a salesman.

I told him that my truck was not running. I explained the mechanical problems in detail. He said that it was not a problem. He said I would get less money for the trade-in, since it was not running, but that "we are definately still interested in buying it." His exact words.

I made an appointment to have my truck appraised. I paid to have the truck towed from the repair shop to CarMax. When I got there the salesman was nowhere to be found. I was "greeted" by a very grouchy woman who seemed annoyed with life in general and me in particular. I was made to wait about 40 minutes past my "appointment" time before a salesman even talked to me. There were no other customers so I don't know what took so long.

After the appraisal, the salesman informed me they would offer me $50 for my truck. That is correct. Fifty dollars. For a 5-year old truck that is perfect except for the engine problem that can be fixed for a few hundred dollars. I saw similar trucks for sale on their lot for $6000 and up. Some even older than mine.

Needless to say, I was outraged. I was expecting at least $500 to $1000 for the trade in. I tried to tell the salesman how ridiculous the offer of $50 was and he got angry and practically yelled at me.

I did not sell my truck to them or buy a new one from them. I do not recommend CarMax to anyone. They were rude, grouchy and they outright lied to me. A complete waste of time and money.

Service, Extended Warranty
We brought a VW Touareg 2004 on May 2008. Since the next day we got our car had been in the service department 8 times. First thing was the flat tire sensor (2 times with carmax and 2 times with WV David Maus). On January we took back again because the headlight system shutdown in the middle of the night. On January 2nd, they said that will be replacing the left side system and we have to wait until the right side system basically dies to be replaced. We were having the check lights sensor in and out and on May we took back because was shutting down again. Since this day our nightmare started. On that day, they ordered the part to be replaced and made another appointment for us. One week later they called me to let me know the part came and I scheduled the appointment, I tooked the truck and waited 4 hours at the service center, after that they told me that was the bulb, the part "still good", when I was driving on my way back home, the check light sensor came up again, I called Dana the service advisor and left a voice mail after almost two weeks calling her finally she returned my call and she told me bring the car again and we will be taking to VW to fix it. I took it within 5 days (Wednesday June 24th) they rented a car with enterprise (that I have to leave a $50.00 deposit to have it). On Friday she told me, the car was ready for pick up and they updated the bulb from 2004 to 2009, and as a Carmax favor they will be paying for it because the extended warranty does not cover "updates", I said I never asked for update, I asked to fix the part. And I had an argument with the manager and he told me I am done with you, you have to appreciated that we paid for it and you have to leave this place, because they drove my car without my authorization and with no lights and used the gas that I have in my tank and never replaced gas on my tank. I was kind of angry and upset. I called Corporate to try to deal with them and I spoke to Margaret and told me they don't pay for gas and I have a warranty with VW just call and deal with them. Six days later my right side headlights shutdown, I don't have any lights at all. When I called carmax again and spoke to Luis Pedroza he told me that Carmax closed the doors for me and if need to take my car needs to be with VW service center and I need to start in zero with my issue, that was the last words. I have an extended warranty from Carmax the name is Maxcare and now they are saying this warranty does not belongs to them. I called VW to schedule the appoitnment and told me if carmax brought the car to them, I need to leave the car at Carmax and they have to bring it back.

Dismissive and disrespectful staff
Carmax does not allow pre-purchase inspection of their vehicles. Once you pay your money and drive off the lot, do NOT expect quality customer care as a follow up to your purchase. After having purchased a high end luxury vehicle from Carmax and taking it to a luxury brand specialist for a post-purchase inspection, I discovered a few minor issues. I promptly scheduled an appointment with Carmax to address and fix those issues. They would not take in my vehicle until the 5th day after purchase. (You will have 5 calendar days to address mechanical issues and return the vehicle). Instead of replacing rear brake pads and rotors which were deemed to be "very low" by the luxury brand specialist, Carmax simply told me that they were fine in their opinion. Instead of ordering the $185 missing undercarriage panel, Carmax said they wanted me to come in and point out what was missing. How would I know? Instead of addressing the driver side door which would not close properly, Carmax said it seemed to be due to a puffy inner door seal. Bottom line: Carmax will take your money and run with it, leaving you to diagnose and fix any issues with the vehicle yourself. I had even purchased the highest level of extended warranty, which did no good as it did not cover the said repair. The sales manager spoke down to me and argued with me for a half hour about why I was wrong to ask for a little consideration and quality customer service.

I spoke to a service tech, the service manager, the sales manager, a business office associate, an operations manager, 3 customer care rep's in the corporate office, the CEO's secretary. No one would connect me to the local branch's general manager or to the company CEO. Why? Because no one of real power wants to hear of how shoddy their employees treat their "valued" customers. The repair I requested would cost, in their opinion, "a couple hundred dollars".

If Carmax won't absorb a "couple hundred dollars" to satisfy a customer, aggravates a situation by arguing with the customer, does not return phone calls as promised, then they do not deserve a good reputation. The public and the shareholders have a right to know how dismissive and disrespectful the staff is.

Crashed Car
I purchased a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 (55, 000 miles) from Carmax on May 5, 2009. Between that day and June 15, 2009 I have taken the car back to carmax 6 times (11 days total without a car) It took them 6 attempts to fix my steering and it was not until the 6th attempt that they finally decided to replace my rack and pinion along with a broken tierod end. My A/C makes a horrible hissing sound after it being on for more then 5 minutes to witch Carmax states its perfectly normal although a professional A/C mechanic explained to me that it was a bad expansion valve. My vehicle is covered with Maroone Collision Stickers on all the door panels. I noticed these when I first purchased the vehilce but I assumed they were there because the vehicle was originally sold by a Maroone dealership. After dealing with the faulty steering, bad brakes, and various instrument panel lights going out (headlamp switch, foglamp switch, radio power button) I began to wonder if this vehicle was in an accident originally. I called the Maroone collision center and sure enough they told me it was in deed in a crash but would not give me further details on it seeing as I was not the original owner of the vehicle at the time of repair. I had the vehicle expected by a friend who is an ex-employee from Kendall Collision and was a quality control manager (he would inspect cars after they were repaired to make sure they were up to industry standards) and he confirmed that the vehicle was crashed. My driver door was misaligned, the driver fender was misaligned. The driver side headlamp was misaligned, the driver side fog light was misaligned, the hood release cable was mis routed and binding, different bolts that hold the fender in place were in use vs the passenger side. Along with all the issues I have had earlier with the steering, brakes, and lights he said he was 110% confident it was in a crash. But the carfax report said it was clean and no accidents. I took it to carmax today because there I was tired of dealing with this nightmare and explained to them that I wanted a full refund or to swap out my car because of the fact that it was crashed. I spoke to Steven Wheeler (Operations Manager) and he told be flat out "We sell crashed cars here at carmax, but we dont sell cars with frame damage. Your car is a used car and you should expect it to have problems" I was astonished at this comment but more outraged at the fact that Steven just admited that carmax sales crashed vehicles. I told him that this was a deceptive sales tactic as they had a ford sedan parked in the showroom with a sign on it that says "we would never sell you a car like this, because it use to look like this" and under that it had a picture of the same vehicle crashed. I assumed that carmax does NOT sell crashed cars. In fact the entire reason I went and purchased a vehicle at carmax (for an outrageous price tag as well) was for the guarantee that these vehicles are not crashed and had a 125 point inspection. If I knew the vehicle was going to have so many problems and was crashed I wouldve paid thousands less then what I did for it. I might as well have just gone to any other dealership to purchase a vehicle. Mr. Wheeler explained to me that I should be grateful for the repairs they have made on my USED vehicle because its a USED vehilce and it will have its problems. I then told Mr. Wheeler that this company lacks proper business ethics practices deceptive sales tactics. They will be hearing from my attorney.

Awful company
Just a brief report of my experiences with these scam artists. They lure people in thinking that they are a different, safer way to buy and sell cars. But they basically prey on those who don't have a clue what they are doing. As bad as car dealers are, at least with car dealers you can negotiate buying and selling prices.

My experience today with trying to sell my car, was an eye opening experience. After getting an appraisal, I was offered a comically low price for my 2007 Camry, Thank God I did my homework. I can imagine the multitude of saps that believe these guys. While I waited for my appraisal I looked at a 2001 Corolla with 64K on it that they had priced at a non negotiable $9500.

The offer they gave me for my 2007 Camry with 39K miles, in perfect condition (as per their appraisal)- $10000! I laughed in his face. Check out some of their prices at their stores that sell both used and new cars. The new car price is often LOWER than an identical used car from them! DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND SHOP AROUND.

Scam and cheating
My firm has represented consumers in a number of cases where CarMax has sold them vehicles that were previouly wrecked and had significant concealed accident damage.

CarMax maintains lobby displays in many of their Florida stores where they a have clean, full sized vehicle with a sticker on the windshield stating REJECT. Next to the car is a large billboard stating 'we would never sell you this vehicle because it used to look like this' 'only the best cars make our lot' and there is a large picture showing the vehicle in a wrecked condition. The conclusion that most people seem to draw is that CarMax does not sell wrecked vehicles.

CarMax then provides a 125 point inspection that further cements that they make a rigerous inspection to determine if there is accident damage on a vehicle.

Most consumers are shocked to learn that not only does CarMax sell wrecked vehicles that have been repaired or repainted but that CarMax actually purchases wrecked vehicles and repairs and repaints them for resale on its lot.

It goes without saying that wrecked vehicles have a lower resale value and often develop problems down the road. Such practices are contrary to Florida's Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act and Federal legislation. If you have purchased such a vehicle do not hesitate to seek legal advice.

Poor service, Dishonest
Bought a used vehicle there in February. Within 3 weeks, I had it back in for a brake service because the brakes were making a metal-on-metal sound. They "fixed" them and sent me on my way. Within a week, I am hearing the noise again, and decide that I should go to an Acura dealership. Long story short, the front brakes (which were the ones they worked on) were non-Acura, and so were not fitting properly. Also, the Acura dealership said that Carmax bent (ruined) 2 screws in the braking component because they tried to put it on with the wrong tool. To make matters worse, they told me that my back brakes had 1 mm left on them, and that ALL of my fluids (brake, transmission, etc) were dirty and didn't look like they had ever been replaced.

Beware of Carmax's "quality inspection." They apparently just make sure the car runs well enough to make it off the lot.

Oh, and while my car was in service with Carmax, they scratched my leather dashboard!

They sell lemons!
I purchased my car from Carmax based upon its 125 point inspection only to find out later from the Jaguar repair shop that the vehicle had major issues. Carmax's service department repeatedly told me the car was okay but I insisted something was wrong. My vehicle was at the repair shop for 2 weeks when I decided to take it upon myself to call the repair shop myself. They stated the car had major issues and they didn't want to service it and gave me a list of the issues. Carmax Service stated we are not going to make you a new car. I still believe in the business model carmax has laid out but HONOR is not something I feel they believe in at this point since they are vividly trying to avoid responsibility for the $20k plus repairs that have taken place thus far. Moreover, I have driven the car only 25k miles with continuous problems. What happens once the warranty is up? I still have to pay them for the car and repair bills. Doesn't sound fair to me

Rip off on shipping car to local store
I paid to have a car shipped to my local Carmax dealer. After it did not make it onto the transport for the 3rd time and the store manager lying telling me it had already shipped when in fact it had not I decided it was a big mistake on my part and to eat the shipping fee rather than deal with a company that lies and steals from it's customers. I'd think REAL hard if your considering Carmax.
