Custody Schedules

I frequently have parents who come in and tell me, “I want 50/50 custody” and really don’t know what that means or what that looks like. It is important to know that there are two types of custody, legal and physical. Legal custody is who makes the decisions for the children. Normally, parents share joint legal custody and will make decisions together regarding education, religion, extracurricular activities, non-emergency medical procedures, etc. Joint physical custody is the actual time the child spends with each parent. That can be alternating weekends and a mid-week visit with one parent (80/20), some version of a 50/50 custody schedule, or something in between. Examples of a 50/50 custody schedule are as follows:

Week on/Week off: Parents alternate weeks usually exchanging on Sunday evening.
2/2/5 Schedule: One parent has the child two days (Monday/Tuesday), then the other parent has the following two days (Wednesday, Thursday), and then the parents alternate Friday to Monday morning.

Alternating days and weekends: In this scenario, the child is with one parent Monday and Wednesday, the other parent Tuesday and Thursday, and then the parents alternate Friday through Monday morning. Although this may seem like a lot of back and forth, many children like this schedule because they see both parents frequently.

Remember when determining a custody schedule, parents need to look at what is best for the child. Sometimes due to work schedules or the child’s schedule, 50/50 does not always work for every family and there may be some hybrid that is a better alternative. The main objective for parents going through a divorce should be to protect the children as much as possible and a big part of that is coming up with a parenting plan that works for everyone, especially the children.
