Unreasonable pricing and Unproffessional Salesmen
Empire came out and gave us an estimate to put laminate throughout our home (living room, kitchen, hallway) and to replace the trim around the perimeter of the room. The salesman was more interested in trying to be our friend than to make a sale. He was loud, and rude. Since it's a condo that we only plan to live at about 2 more years before we sell, we wanted something middle grade - so he went to his car & said he would bring the middle grade up. After getting the estimate (joke!), he said it would be cheaper if we went with laminate that wasn't as nice as what he had was the top of the line. And this stuff was ugly and cheap looking. And he said he had brought the middle grade up, now he says it was the best they had? At 680 square feet, the idiot salesman offered us a joke of a price of $11,000. Now keep in mind they were having a 50% off laminate flooring sale - yeah right!! We tell him it's not QUITE what we had in mind. And all he could say was "it's a big job". We asked for a written estimate, and he could show us nothing. He said he would get one out to us. Well that was a month ago, and I have nothing. We have gone to Lowe's since that time, and got our own estimate of only $5,400 and they measured very very thoroughly. The estimate was very detailed, and customer service is friendly, and they know what they're doing. With moving our own furniture, and appliances, we actually got it down to a mere $4,500. And it's real Pergo flooring and special order kitchen laminate. Not that ugly crap Empire offered us. I hope they get so many complaints that they go out of business! Up yours Empire! 588-rip off!

Poor service!
I own a very reputable carpet company in Denver & Parker Colorado. I just interviewed a salesman from Empire Carpets looking for a job. He bragged to me about defrauding the public by selling inferior carpets (P.E.T.)'s on average $ 5.00 to $ 7.00 a yard carpet and selling it for $ 40.00 a yard.

He boasted about selling eighty year old women and praying on the ignorance of his clientel. The company trains their sales force to make their house payment on every sale. The company as a whole makes an average of 500%.

This is a travesty!

Poor service!
I, too, had a man from Empire Carpet come to my home to measure and give me a free estimate for new carpet in my basement/gameroom. After he measured the room, which is nearly 1/2 of my basement, he showed me some samples, sat down and wrote up some figures. He told me I have 115 square yards (which calculates to 1,035 square feet) to cover and the original price was over $5,000, but with the 'discounts' it came down to around $3,500. I was SHOCKED by this price. He asked me what I thought it would cost and I told him 'around $1,000 - $1,500 and told him I wasn't interested, that this was too expensive for me. He then told me he could 'make a phone call' to his boss to see what he could do for me. ( I figured he thought he could get over on me since I'm a single woman) After speaking to the boss, he told me that the shade/style of carpet that I wanted was being discontinued and they 'just happened to have three rolls of it in the warehouse' so they could discount it by taking $800 off the price. I told him I still didn't want it. He told me if I changed my mind and wanted the carpet the next day, I couldn't get it for that price. I said it i was ok, that if I wanted it from them I was sure I could get that 'discounted price'. He left.

I had another carpet company come to measure and give me a price for carpet. This company measured my room at 664 square feet. I asked the man if he measured correctly, and he said he did. Then I called another company to come to measure, just to make sure of the measurement. This third company measured the area to be 670 square feet, which is pretty close to the second measurement.

I phoned Empire and asked to speak to the man who gave me the original estimate. When he got on the phone, I asked him to please clarify the measurement and the estimated price. After a few minutes of fumbling, he said he couldn't locate my paperwork. I asked him to please phone me and let me know what his measurement/estimate was. That was yesterday. I'm still waiting for him to return my call. I think I may email the Attorney General's office to let them know about Empire.

Italian Tile stolen 3-4 boxes!
This company is a scam. I paid way too much for work done. The salesman was a shyster. Empire did nothing to help me fix the problem. Excuses after excuses! I could have done the work myself and not gotten ripped off! I am frustrated and feel IO was taken advantage of. I will NEVER use this company again!

Misleading advertising!
On 9/13/07, a Empire sale rep visited my newly purchased home in an effort to offer a free estimate in the hopes of possibly making a purchase. The rep, upon entering the home presented body language as if he knew he would not make a sale that day. And, why waste my time. I do believe he came to this conclusion based on the neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. ALSO, i FIRST TOLD HIM I WAS A RENTER. We began discussing what my needs were. He immediately told me, "we only have one type of wood-and it is the highest price", he went on further to say"laminate or carpet may be better as it is the least expensive". I questioned how much would the hard wood floor... cost. He then took i guess what was a measurement that arrived at 80sq. ft., and quoted a price at over $2500. He then went on to say well the traffic, and who would be walking on a daily basis-along with looking and judging my weight(180)might not be such a good purchase. At no time did he offer the pay later deal as advertised. I was told that my credit would be checked at the time of estimate-he did nothing. I believe he assumed my credit would not go through, although it is 725. BASICALLY IN A NUT SHELL THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH MY EXPERIENCE. SO PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE IN CERTAIN NEIGHBORHOODS. THEY WILL NOW OFFER THEIR FULL PROFESSIONALISM. THEY WILL JUDGE YOU BASED ON RACE AND LOCATION. THIS IS TRULY WHAT I FEEL HAPPENED IN THIS CASE. HE OFFERED HIS APOLOGIES, BUT FOR WHAT. HE COULD HAVE MADE A CASH SALE WITH THE CORRECT MEASUREMENTS...

Rudeness & no direct answers to questions
The sales person came to our home. Showed us six different carpets & asked us to select while he measured two bedrooms. When he returned to the living room my husband ask how much each carpet was. the sales persons reply was "$99 a square yard, but Mr Empire doesn't like him to give out a price before a quote SO LET'S DO IT MY WAY!"

This made my husband so mad he left the house. As a consumer you want to know what you are paying for & how much. He continued to push me to order. I told him I needed to finish painting. He said the installers would mess up the fresh paint so I needed to install right away. When I said I had another company coming the next day and he couldn't fault me for shopping around he said NOBODY could beat his price. The price was another issue all together. He never said anything about padding. When I asked he said "do you think we would install carpet without padding" but he didn't have any samples to show me.

This was a very bad experience & I hope nobody else has to put up with the rudeness.

Very poor quality of carpet
Empire installers was at my home on06/22/07 to install carpet. I noticed the carpet was not of the quality I had chosen. I immediately phoned Empire. In speaking with the first employee I was hung up on. I phoned back and spoke with a Timothy he asked that I have the carpet installed. I said NO WAY. Again the carpet was a second grade carpet that one would have installed in a family room or den. The customer service that I recieved was VERY POOR. As of now I am still awaiting a phone call from Empire.

Bait and switch and rip off!
In January 2005 I had a carpet installed in my house. The first day, after scheduling and confirming early morning installation they showed up at 5pm. The installation was then rescheduled for following day, they showed up in a timely manner this time but when moving furniture they broke my entertainment center (which I was compensated for). After almost completing the job, my wife walked in and found they were installing the wrong color carpet. So after much debate and 2 salesman (the first one conveniently didn't have that sample in his kit). They Finally arranged to have the correct carpet installed. So about 2 weeks later installation was commencing and all was done except for approx 1.5 along living room wall, when the installer stated he must stop as the rest of the carpet was from a "different dye lot" and would need to order in new carpet again. Approx one week later I took another day off work, the installers showed up opened the back door of the truck, I was called over and he stated they gave him wrong carpet again. So again they reordered the carpet and again I waited. A few days later I was called and told the carpet had arrived and installation was scheduled for a later date and FINALLY a carpet was permanently installed in my house (almost without incident). They damaged my china closet, but I didn't report it as even I would not believe me at that point and at this point quite honestly I wanted nothing more to do with this company.

After approx 3 months I noticed an area of the carpet had risen and was getting frayed in a traffic area by the steps to the only bathroom in the house. I called and reported it and they schedule an "independent inspector"to look at area, this Gentleman stated the area was delaminated by pet urine and no service would be provided. He was using a moisture gauge which showed twice the allowed moisture, I knew pet urine was not an issue so I contested this ruling and another inspector was sent who used the proper tool (a blacklight) to inspect the area, he stated to me clearly that pet urine was not the cause that the seam was installed in a traffic area and that it was installation error. So empire ONCE AGAIN was forced to replace my carpet, however my carpet was no longer available and it cost me an additional $250.00 to upgrade my carpet. But installation was scheduled and AGAIN I moved all my furniture out so the carpet could be replaced again. When the installers left it was noticed they had not stretched , they had had miscut an area on the stairs and just plugged in carpet which came up first vacuuming and did an unacceptable job around the banister. So they scheduled their repair tech "mike" and he stretched the living room but stated the stairs had to be handled by the original installer. He stated that I would be contacted within a week. After a few days I started calling asking when the repair would be completed. Left many voicemails but got no return calls. So after approx 1 month I contacted the credit card company Ge Capitol to file a dispute and stop their payments. The dispute was canceled though because Empire stated that I and never contacted them with a problem, Voicemails were Left with Cynthia as well as Chris at the Cinainson Nj location (the local market as they call it). Phone number 856 or toll free 888-588-2320 and never got a return call, so I file a second dispute was filed and again this one just disappeared , I called Chris again last week and was told he would not help as I am "out of warranty"and he was never informed I had a problem, the call was then abruptly ended.

I then called Corporate again and lodged a complaint with e office of the president Ranisha (not sure of spelling) who referred my complaint to Tim Sherman the regional manager, he did return my call Friday 4th and basically called me a liar about my repeated calls and attempt to correct the problem stating that he had no record of my calls. I know between my cell phone and home phone I have called over 20 times (27 to be exact) but he stated if I could prove 1 he would arrange repair, well as of Saturday I have proved 6 and am waiting for phone records from cell phone company and Left District Rep a message at 888-588-2315 ext 7813 and no return call has occurred. I did tell mr Sherwin that if he didn't respond quickly I would be contacting channel 6 and was told go ahead I have them handled "did I ever notice that no report has ever been done on us"

It is obvious that this company thinks they are above that which most would call good business practices and they certainly think they are more powerful than channel 6 and since I know better I would love to give you guys a shot at them.

Today I spoke with Tim, he stated that he received my proof of my making phone calls and is still not willing to help me. He stated that I have been paid 60% of cost, this was reimbursed for time lost from work and the entertainment center they broke.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Fraudulent quote!
On 2/21/07, a sales representative from Empire came to my house to give me a quote. The representative measured the two rooms (living room and bedroom), advising me that it totaled 80 square yards. I picked out two different samples. For the less expensive sample, he advised that it cost $29 per square yard, including removal of the existing carpet, padding and installation. Including taxes, he quoted a price slightly more than $2,500. After I hesitated, he stated that the "sale" would end that day. I asked him what the "regular price" was, and he responded that it was $38 per square yard. After I hesitated further, he asked how much I would be willing to pay. I paused, then stated, "maybe $2,000." He said, "Okay, but I need to know now." I hesitated again, and then I left the room to call a contractor-contact of mine to ask if that price was reasonable. He advised me that the price was high. I told the sales representative that I had to think about it, and I would call him the following week. After he left, I had an independent carpeting contractor come to the house to give me a competitive quote. The other contractor came to my house later in the day to take measurements. He advised me that the two rooms totaled only 68 square yards. Thus, the Empire sales representative lied to me about the total yardage. I decided to drop it, and not call Empire back.

The most egregious act by Empire, however, was still to come. On 2/25/07, I received a call from an Empire telephone representative, who asked me if I was interested in purchasing the carpet. Without explanation, I said no. She responded that Empire could beat the last quote. I stated that I was still not interested. She asked me why. I then started to explain the entire story, including that Empire lied about the amount of square yards. Before I was finished explaining what had happened, but after I told her that Empire lied about the total yardage, the Empire telephone representative hung up on me. I fully expected her to apologize and tell me that Empire would undertake an investigation, but instead she did just the opposite. By hanging up on me, she exposed Empire for the fraud it really is. Obviously, this was not a situation where the sales representative who went to my home was a "bad egg." To the contrary, by hanging up on me, she proved that Empire is in on the fraud. Empire's fraudulent scheme, among other things, is to overquote the amount of square yards needed. Empire should be shut down.

Prices are a ripoff!
They cater to the buyer who has just made up their mind and wants the carpet tomorrow regardless of price... one stop shopping, no interest for a year.

They measured my house at 173 yards... Home Depot measured 142 yards... Home Depot's price was $3360... Empire was $6000, no details.
