Dollar General Reviews

Treatment of employees
I just want to warn those of you that plan to apply to work in management at Dollar General. Please, for the sake of your sanity, DON'T! If you want to work in management, do it elsewhere.

I was hired as a keyholder earlier this year at $7.50 an hour. It was my first management position and I was excited for the chance to gain experience. It turned out to be one of the worst choices i've ever made. In the interview, they were straight-forward about what my responsiblities were and kept emphasising how EASY it is to be promoted. So, for the first week or so, it was an enjoyable experience. But then the manager got sick, and that's when all hell broke loose. As it turns out, the whole damn district was in such a chaotic mess that they had me opening and closing two different stores and not bothering to tell me what my schedule would be. This was fine for a week or two, but when it looked like NO end in sight, I went to the district manager. He did NOTHING but made me promises. Here I was, barely knowning what I was doing, working nearly 60 hrs a week! I finally quit when after it started taking a toll on my health (because not knowing when i was working, I had to eat out/junk food) and my relationship. Keep in mind, I don't blame my immediate managers...they had their hands full too. However, upper management needs to remember its employees and GET ORGANIZED!

Again, please don't work for them...you might not get your sanity back!

rude management
I went into Dollar general to pick up a few things. When I got to the register I noticed a few items rang up for more than the price they were marked on the shelf. When I spoke to a member of management about it, her name was Chauntel, she told me that the tags were wrong and should have been changed a long time ago. She then refused to change the prices for me saying that I should have noticed the dates on the shelf stickers were several years old. Isnt that the store management's job? This store in Leesville has gotten ridiculous in the last year

requested days off
Given plentiful time in advance for day off for testing ordered by doctor and did not get it...Pretty cold of a company to ask this from their employees.

Bird feeder
I bought a bird feeder from Dollar General. It just fell apart. I stoped by one day & showed them to a manager on duty. They were falling apart sitting on shelf & had not been removed. I has toldto bring it back & exchange it for something else. I took it in today, but ended up leaving w/ the junk. The manager on duty would not take it back & treated me like some fool. Unless this is taken care of I will not go back to any Dollar General.

angry customerr
I've always liked shopping at this store when they first opened. The longer they have been here the more the cashiers just seem so un happy with their jobs. Maybe its management? The cashiers wear, or should I say used to wear nice bright yellow polos. Now they look like some one ran their shirts over on a blacktop pavement. The cashiers are not professionally dressed to work in a sales department store. They some times look as if they just crawled out of bed. For some reason, this store always only seem to have one cashier working!! Even when there are up to ten customers in line. My comment to this day is, "I rather go across the street to the Family dollar store" because, for one: they hardly ever have a line and they seem happy with where the work and are always professional. My wait in line at dollar general is ususally 20 to 30 minutes long... I dont understand why the other worker does not help out?? I like the sales that they offer at dollar general, but the wait is ridiculous!! Esspecially when you see elders in line who can barely stand.. This is a very busy store and is understandable, would be nice if they had an available clerk to help out when it gets busy. As far as appearance, maybe clerks be offered more than one shirt for work. That will avoid the the wear and tear. Because trust me, they do have an employee who does wear her work shirt with HOLES in it. And I believe she is a manager! Very embarrassing. Dont you think?? To enjoy the dollar general prices we go out of way and drive to the Ft. Mohave store that is 20 miles from my home.. When the local one is only 5 minutes away. Very shameful.

deceptive sale prices
When shopping last Saturday around 2:00 in the afternoon I purchased cherry pie filling with a sale tag of $2. I then got to the register and saw 2 litre Coke on sale for $1. When my purchases were being rung up I noticed that the clerk had charged # 2.25 for the pie filling. He said "Was it a tag like that? (Pointing to the soda stack) I said "Yes" to which he replied "That is tomorrow's sale." I said "That is deceptive advertising." He replied "I know, but the manager wanted to get the signs up before he left." The people behind me were going to buy the soda too until he said that. These signs should not have been up until late evening. No telling how many people bought stuff thinking it was on sale and paid the regular price.

Retaliation
I complained to my district manager about the damages in my store #11824 ...because it hadn't been done in over a week by a specific employee Tom Faga who is in charge of that ..after the email.. the damages were done now nor Tom Faga speaks to me or The store manager since I sent the email...josh woomer is the acting store manager and she should act like one he lets Tom Faga do nothing all day and get paid for it when everyone has to work to get paid...I am the store assistant store manager and since the email Josh woomer has decided to cut my hours from 40 hrs to 35 hrs for next week and Tom Faga has 38hrs...it"s not that Josh woomer is cutting my hours because of my work ethics or performance or attendance..it"s just because I made the dm aware of his slacking performance in running the store Tom Faga knows that he is to do the damages twice a week and does what he wants to do and I end up doing it because of the best interest of the store and the company...I have child support which will be affected by this change decided by Josh woomer...The store moral has gone down so low by the actions of Josh woomer that most of the employees want to resign...is there anything someone can do to help me resolve this situation I'm also getting fed up but he's not going to get away with playing with my livelyhood or my kids I need help to resolve this asap please thanks

Dollar General is trying to use me as a scape goat for their lack of security at the store at which I was employed. I was an employee there less than six weeks. While working there I can recall a few incidents of customers stealing. When this occurred I responded and reacted as I was trained. I immediately attempted to alert the on duty store manager. The Managers' response was lackadaisical or none at all. As the only employee on duty and having the cash register responsibility with no security guard at the store, there is not much an employee can do. I alerted the Managers and they did nothing. Each time there was a theft while I was working there I alerted the Manager and received no response. Currently Dollar General i maintaining that I was in some type of conspiracy to steal over $40, 000 worth of merchandise from their store. This is absolutely ludicrous. I even cooperated with them to tell them the people I knew who were involved. Dollar General is maintaining that I am responsible for losses incurred at that store even before I started working there. I was a good employee, enjoyed the time I was there and was loyal to Dollar General. I would think to get that much merchandise I would have to back up an 18 wheeler to the store and load it up to get that much merchandise. I am unemployed and have three kids I will not go to jail for something i didnt do. Dollar General picked me to blame because their store is located in a high crime area, they do not have adequate security and they thought I was weak and they could use me as a scapegoat. I truly believe that the store GM interrogated me like I was a criminal when i was the victim. I was mis-treated and talked to like I was a criminal. Even the investigating police officer was not forthright. I attempted to contact them many times to no avail to try to assist in this case. In the end I am being charged with felony theft while they have absolutely no evidence. As I stated in my opening I am being made a scapegoat due to the lack of security. This appears to be an insurance scam. I have done absolutly nothing wrong and will fight till I am fully acquitted. I am planning on suing Dollar General for defamation of Character. I will keep readers of this board informed .
