Dollar General Reviews

No Breaks for Working sometimes open to close and more than 8 hours
I am a former employee for this company and while working there just over 2 years, I can count on the both hands the number of lunch breaks I was able to take. I started there as a 3rd Key holder and worked up to assistant manager. I started working for them in Vestal, New York. Worked in a few location there, before relocating to Cleveland, Ohio, where I transfered to. In all locations, I either did not get to take any kind of break, or was told, if you have to do something, punch back in, take care of the problem, and punch back out. From what I know of the federal law, it states, at least a 30 minute UNINTERRUPTED break. I even sometimes worked open to close shifts, because none of the other Managers would come in to let me leave or to take a break even. I would like to know if there is a lawyer that would take this on as a case, because I know it is still happening within this company. Is there a lawyer or does anyone know of a lawyer? I have copies of most of my scheduals from the Ohio store for proof of hours worked for the 7 months I worked there before leaving.

Profiling
This complaint is specifically for Store # 12304, 12320 Dessau Rd Austin Tx 78754. I realize this is a new store and it is in high tech location. Which means there are a lot of professionals of all races. In fact the two employers at the the time of my complaint could be seen as the minority in this location. My complaint is that my sister and I stopped at Dollar General to check it out because it is new to the area and we were winding down a shopping day. We are African American, and were followed around the store by these two small minded employees and there were other customers in the store. I like shopping at Dollar General, but this store I will never step foot in. I am a retired veteran and my sisters are both long term professionals of a Government Agency. This experience was degrading and I wanted so badly to speak my mind at the time, but realized they have to live with their ignorance and it will catch up to them. I will share my experience with all my friends, neighbors and family about that specfic store. I live in the area and will gladly drive a few more miles to another store.

discrimination
dear sirs, I recently applied for a job at your company and took the test and PASSED. The manager at this particular store denied me a job due to personal choices. She claimed that I did'nt pass the test in which I later found out was a lie. Her name is Dusty and I THINK SHE SHOULD BE TERMINATED. I have 20 years experience in retail and I believe that I have been discriminated against. FURTHER ACTION SHALL TAKE PLACE AGAINST THIS PARTICULAR STORE.

Misc.
D.G. does not have enough belted checkouts! Only one!
The other checkouts are way too small!
When the managers go to their "special" meetings...they are told NOT to trust ANY of their employees...AND, when they remodeled their stores...they didn't put the cameras on the customers (that sometimes steal - most do not) BUT, they put the cameras instead on the cashiers!
I am very offended NOT to be trusted!
They have raised their prices! They don't give the same hours every week...they keep varying them! They don't hire enough help!
Everyone is exhausted from over work! There are way too many rules...and they keep coming up with more and more reasons to "write you up" so that they can fire you! Then the manager has to keep taking the time to train new hirees! How stupid!..And, they don't offer working hours from 10 - 4. Only 8a.m.-3 oo or 3-9:30 p.m.
The BIG guys in TN don't have a clue as to how a store is really run...and the district managers all do things "their way"...and then change their minds the next week! The main problem with this company is that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing! They do NOT communicate! Even when the prices change...they are so slow to put the changes in the computer..which results in more customer dissatisfaction! It is also a pain that you have to have a manager to do a void or a correction...esp. when the manager is in the back of the store with the TRUCK taking care of a delivery and CANNOT come up to the register to help or they can get fired...BUT, they are the only person allowed to do the void and or correction (with their key)...Also D.G. store stops selling seasonal things that are still needed..for example...they will run out of ice melt in the middle of the winter...when we really need it...Don't they realize that people up North still have snow even when TN doesn't!? They are always doing things like this!
AND...they make the employees buy their own uniforms!!!
AND...they don't pay very much...ALL of the employees are way overworked! And when they promise a raise...to the people that have supposedly gone up (like to 3rd or 4th key)...they make them wait for ever for their TINY raise!...The employees are just PIONS to them...They could care less about them!
Where I used to work, we had a really good team...the manager got along quite well with all of his employees...BUT, the company itself puts sooooooooooooo much pressure on the manager and it's employees... They are just out to make $ at all costs! I have seen their company in TN...it is quite extravagant! I'd like to see their top dogs be cashiers or employees putting up freight for about a month...(for minimum wage)...then maybe they would change their ways...But, they don't care...they just don't care...

Dictatorial Managers
I have been working at Dollar General for just over a year, and have seen many managers come and go. Most of the time, there is no issue with anyone. I've always gotten along with my coworkers, and the work environment was pleasant.

In November of last year, my district manager brought in a new assistant manager (not to replace the one we already had; I have yet to figure out why he brought her to our store) and there were immediate power-plays between the new assistant, who was also a store manager candidate, and the store manager. It made work horrible. It got to the point where I was miserable coming in, and finally, the beloved manager was fed up with everything and quit. We were without a manager for about two months, with the csm acting as manager.

She is perpetually nasty to us, spreads untrue rumours about people in an effort to break up the camaraderie we have (that does not include her), and often hands us monstrous task-lists that we cannot hope to complete on time, and berates us afterwards for not finishing everything she told us to do. I myself have stooped to a sort of non-violent, discrete sort of revenge, deliberately not mopping the floors or leaving the trash in the buckets. But she continues without commenting, simply adding more things to do. There is no end to the name calling behind her back - everyone in the store hates her. Even customers have complained about her attitude and disrespect. When I finally gathered myself together to email the district manager, I received a phone call three days later at the store in which he said simply "I got your email. I'll sit down and talk to her."

Everyone who knows "Atilla the Hun" told me that as soon as he talked to her, she'd rain almighty whatfor down on our heads, making us even more miserable than before. A week passed by, and there was *no change* in her behaviour whatsoever. We all concluded that the district manager did nothing.

During an LP audit last week, I was taken to task for several things I was doing wrong. The LP was great; polite, serious, and honest. When the DM came in to talk to me, I felt like I was in third grade, being berated. He talked to me like I was a small child, asking me slowly, "What are floors for?" Because one of my wrong-doings was sitting on the floor to count the safe. "What are the bag carousels for?" Because I sat on one of the carousels for a few minutes one night, exhausted from a week and a half without a day off and the busiest weekend we'd had in about three months. He threatened to *FIRE* me and anyone else in the store, me specifically because I was 'sitting' and 'taking too many smoke breaks."

This was after I told him what a stressful environment our store had become, and laid the blame fully at the feet of "Atilla, " his rumoured 'golden child.' I can only conclude that the threats of termination were not because I took a few moments to sit down, or because I was smoking too much, but because I dared to speak up to him.

Atilla is spending this week in Richmond, learning how to be a store manager. All of us at the store are praying she will get herself fired for her actions there, in front of people who can't downplay her nasty attitude. If she comes back and stays at our store any longer, I will probably quit. If threats are what complaints get me, then this isn't any company I want to be a part of.

poor service
Every time i go in and get ready to check out there is no one at the counter. I have to wait for at least 5 minutes for someone to come up. Today there was myself and two other customers in line and when i finally said hello, here she comes with an attitude and a ipod in her ear. What is that? Then she just pushes the money in my hand and on to the next customer. What happen to "Thank you have a nice day"? This is an everyday thing.

Fired
My name is Chris Wittkamp. First off, I thought that you needed to have three write ups to get fired, but the district manager fired me with technically only one write up (I have yet to see the second). So now they will not listen to me at all. I asked constantly to be transfered or to get more hours, and they kept refusing me. Also call the old manager of the Delphos store, Catherine, about how the new manager got her job since it goes around corporate policy. I was told in secrecy by the new manager about that.

Treatment of there employees
There is a very young manager there, the age isn't the problem at all. The way he treats his employees and customers get me. They NEVER have 2 people in the am, only 1 girl who is there ALL the time. I go there alot and everyone else has help, she does not! When he is there don't bother to call you can NEVER get through he is on that phone ALL the time you can hear him talkin and it's personal calls. I have heard him call his employees worthless, stupid, lazy, ect. When a customer has an issue his response is "if you don't like it you don't have to shop here." I'm not thinking that's good for bussiness. Him and his assitant are more worried about decorating the store for holidays and redoing the office and bathroom rather than checking out expired food and pricing there products with correct pricing or ANY pricing at all!! Since they are clearly bothered when asked how much somthing is. For the record these things have been turned in before...I guess customer satisfaction isn't a priority there.

Rude Associate
To whom this may concern My name is Tasha Jones and on 1/25/11 I went into the Dollar General in Lynn Haven Fla.Store
07141. Im alway sat this location and mind you I SPEND A LOT OF MONEY IN THIS STORE.Im a single parent so it helps me out alot with the location of the store, well after I gathered all of my groceries the young cashire advised me that his EBT machine had stopped working, so he ask me to to go to the next cashier which was an older gentlmen, so he rung up the lady that was behind me to make sure his EBT machine worked and it did, so i proceeded to put my groceries on the table to be rung up, he rudely told me that i would have to wait and began ringing up all the people that were behind me, he made me stand there for 45min before he rung up my groceries and the only reason I stayed because I needed to get the things that I had for my daughter. This was very unacceptable behavior from the male associate and I am a loyal customer to the Dollar General Store in Lynn Haven Fla.So I would appreciate a call or somthing from somone in upper Mgt or Coporate because I know this behavior is NOT acceptable and I know the company would not tollerate associates being rude to the customers. My name Is Tasha Jones and my contact number is 850-596-3347.Please call me with sme feedback it would be greatly appreciated.Thank you and have a great day

Poor Managment
I have noticed that the manager of the store is never there. It is always the assistant and the third key working. I asked an employee about this one time and the informed me that the manger is supposed to be there 40 hrs a weeks because she gets paid salary, that she puts herself on the schedule and never works those hours in fact there are times when she doesnt come in at all. Doesn't the cooperate office keep track of how many times a manager works a week. I was also informed that the other employees do most the work that she doesnt even do the task assigned to her . The employee that told me this no longer works for dollar general they got tired of the lack of hours given to employees .. Some of them are only getting 10 hours a week how are you supposed to survive on that... I believe this is one poorly ran store . Something needs to be done
