Awful service
I have been a customer of Hughes Net for 5 years, only because I live in a rural area and have no other choice for internet service (I don't consider dial-up a choice). The service has not been that good since I started but knew I had to live with it until a wireless tower was built within range of my home. The service with Hughes Net continued to decline through the years, and many frustrating hours were spent on the phone with people that can't even pretend to care. I upgraded my modem to the 7000 in February, and paid the premium price of $79.99 per month for 'the best' plan. It didn't seem to make a difference in my service, which continued slow. I have been thrown off through their FAP about three times a week, which is extremely frustrating. I tried all known wireless companies, but was forced to live with slow service with Hughes Net. (There is a wireless internet service tower within 2 miles of my home but it is blocked by my neighbor's pole barn). This did not stop my search for a wireless company, and last week I finally found one that is 9 miles away and they provide and excellent signal. I never thought the internet could be so fast, this is really amazing. NOTHING comes close with Hughes Net, THEY ARE NOT HIGH SPEED. When I called to cancel my service, they informed me that I will be paying a $300.00 'early termination' fee. After being a customer for five years??? What do they want, a lifetime commitment? The girl was actually laughing at me on the phone and said I can't do anything about it, because they reset their contracts when someone upgrades the equipment. I talked to three people on the phone, and each one told me that this is something that Hughes Net has as a policy and I can't get around it. Now I know why I wasn't told of this fine print when I upgraded. I would think that if there is an upgrade in the equipment, that it shows customer loyalty and people should not be penalized for this. I am frustrated and have to live with losing $300.00 to these scam artists. I feel the $300.00 is worth the price to have service that is light-years ahead of Hughes Net, AND I'm paying $40.00 per month for this!!! I will never go back to Hughes Net, if I have to use a satellite in the future it will be through another company, or I go to dial-up. I recommend anyone considering this company for service to run as fast as you can the other way. You will not get good internet service or customer service, and you will pay a high price. Lesson learned.

Worst customer service imaginable
Hughes has the worst customer service imaginable. First, when Hughes bought out Direcway, the amount of time and frustration required to get the system switch over was a complete nightmare. You would think that they would do what they need to do, and your account would be functional. Instead, customers were provided with a very technical and time consuming process, that was not clear, to make the switch. After going through that I thought I was through the worst.
But now, after having to move my satellite, I was informed that the old modem somehow couldn't be reconfigured. They did offer to provide a modem at no charge. However, it has cost $125.00 so far for the tech people to readjust the signal. That was even acceptable. But somehow, during the move and the customer service calls, the billing information was somehow messed up. I wasn't aware of this at all until I started to get a 'redirected website' from hughes. Everytime I logged on I got a message stating that I would have my internet redirected to Hughes until I paid a past due amount.
Not knowing that the billing info had been messed up, I of course called them to confirm that this wasn't some sort of phishing to get my credit card info. 40 minutes of talking to the customer service folks, being transferred to wrong parties, etc, being told the wrong thing, they finally advised that the past due was the $125.00 for site service plus the next month's bill. No one could ever tell me how the credit card info with incorrect billing address became incorrect.
After finding the invoice myself on hughes net (that's another ordeal - you've always got to have the extra information, no such thing as just logging in) I decided to pay it and get on with the service, even though technically it was incorrect - they billed me for the next month and why I have no idea. Was this close to changing to Wild Blue, but hated to start a new hassle. So, paid the bill - guess what, when signing on to the internet still being redirected. takes up to 4 hours to have the redirected pages stopped. I found this out only after calling, chating, etc. Hughes never tells you anything up front. The customer service is all outsourced overseas - apparently the Phillipines, so conversing is doubly hard.
To sum it up - if you are thinking of Hughes, use Wild Blue instead. They're customer service is all housed in US (I called to confirm). Otherwise, if there is ever ANY problem, you'll be spending hours of your precious time wasted. I feel that they owe me $$ for the time.

Bad service
My husband got tranfered to Texas from Illinois. We are curretly with hughes Net Internet service. We Told them we couldn't have a satalite service where we are they don't like satalite dishes in the home accociation. Cable only. We asked hughes net to waive the shut off fee. And they told us if we shut off our service that they will put a $300.00 shut off fee on our charge card.
We have 11 months left on our contract. Iasked them if they could waive the fee wwe can not help it if our company has transfered us out of Illinois to Texas we had to go if we want to pay our bills. Basically they told us tuff.

Dishonesty
Hughes net outright lied when I set up my service. I told them that my husband and I online game and asked them what would work best for me. They recommended the pacakge second from the bottom. It worked suspiciously well for the first 30 days (when I could cancel for free). After that we hit the download limit regularly. Upon calling to inquire about this, my husband was told that "everyone knows you can't online game with satellite." Seeing as how that's not what we were told by HughesNet (not a dealer, them directly), apparently not EVERYONE knows that. We paid $400, to set up, $90 for two months, and then $400 to cancel. Yep, that's $1000 for two months of internet service. I'm filing a complaint with the better business bureau and may look into a class action suit.

Service
I live in the country and do not have access to cable or DSL service. I saw the Hughes Net service advertised and purchased it. That was one of the worse mistakes of my life! I purchased the plan that was suppose to give me 1.5 Mbytes download and 200 Kbytes upload. The service started out pretty good. I didn't get the download and upload speeds promised, but it was better than my previous dial-up. Over the period of a few months my service started getting worse, and today I barely get dial-up speeds. I contacted Hughes Net technical support and was subjected to the worse customer support department I've ever had to deal with. The technical support department is in India, and all the people follow scripts. They don't speak very good English, and they ignore (or probably don't understand) what you try to tell them. One of the other things I really hate about Hughes Net is the way they manage download volumes. I am suppose to get 425 Mbytes download per day, but some days I seem to exceed this volume without even turning on my computer! I have no doubt that Hughes Net has grossly over sold their service, and uses the very cheapest method to maintain and support their systems. Bottom line, DON'T GET HUGHES NET SERVICE, it is the worse service out there.

BEWARE OF HUGHES NET SCAM
HUGHES NET NIGHTMARE CONTINUES, This is actually my 3rd complaint about hughes net . Today I found out they have double billed me the last three months. After 3 ear breaking phone calls and being told somthing different each time, they stated they can not refund my money for at least 14 days. The mistake was made by this poor excuse for a company and they cant refund my money for 2 weeks, they can sure take it out within 24 hours. I would never recommend this service to anyone. We have had nothing but problems with this company, the customer service is AWFUL. If you get someone that you can actually understand, they lie to you. Ive heard 3 different stories each time I called. I cant wait till another service is offered in our area. HUGHES NET MAKES ME CRAZY.

Cruddy Service
I had AT&T DSL back in Florida and it was great. Never had slow speed or intermitting sync or anything. It was always up and running and it connected instantly. Upon moving to Tennessee my remote area has only satellite service. I then figured out that I was able to get verizon wireless and it works GREAT!!! I LOVE IT!!! I am within my 30 trial period and they are telling me that I have to pay $400.00 for equipment then I get a $200.00 mail in rebate. What is this? I have been calling everyday for the last 2 weeks about slow speed and I get limited boradband width? Come on because i'm sharing my services with others. Honestly, and they said that it would not be a fee if someone else wanted the service. You have to be kidding right? what makes you think that someone else would want it if it didn't work for me? I'm not puttin this on someone else.
I do college online, which I told them, and i'm constantly downloading. Does anyone know who I can contact about this? I thought about goin to the utilities board which is about 20 mins away but I will be willing to pay for the gas if I thought it would help. Can anyone give me a suggestion on who I can contact about this? Plus the whole in the side of my house and the ugly pole with the dish on it doesn't look that great either.

Horrible Customer Service
I have been a loyal customer of Hughes Net for almost 6 years. In the begining, because of living out in the 'boonies' in Idaho, I had decided to get their service because I lived in an area that did not have any telephone lines.
Now I live in Las Vegas and after the latest Hurricane--when they lost the ability to give service--I never got service back after the skies cleared on the East Coast. They did troubleshooting and I went from screen to screen so they could attpempt to fix the issue. Then came the words...
"We will have to send out a technician" Well...this will cost me $125...and that is just for the technician. THEN they will bill me for any parts and labor. So...almost six yeart of over $60 a month, $500 to install and start...now it's $125 because of a Hurricane that hit the other side of the country?
I am taking the plunge and getting DSL. I know it's a step backwards in speed, but at least it will be LOCAL and I can speak to someone that I can UNDERSTAND and it will cost me LESS THAN 1/2. Hopefully the service will be worth it...speed wise.
