MagicJack Reviews

Pure scam
MagicJack stresses in its ads that you can try it free for 30 days, and that all you need to do to use it is Plus any phone into it, plug it into any USBport, and pick up your phone to talk for free.Their material even includes quotes along the lines of "This is so easy that grandma can do it!"

HOWEVER, while my magicJack just arrived at my home around Dec. 15th, I just found out today (the 20th) that it must be physically back in their hands before the 30 days since I ordered it on the phone are up or you have ipso/facto ordered their product! In other words, I would have just about had to mail it back the day it arrived! So much for a free 30 day trial!

Another example of false or misleading advertising: they rave about how you can take the magicjack with you when you travel and call free from anywhere, but neglect to mention that you actually need TWO magicjacks if you use it for all your local and long distance calls.

There is also what I consider to be misleading advertising by omission. MagicJack loudly emphasizes that one of the service you get, like free voicemail, is a free number. It neglects to mention that this means you have to have a brand new phone number which will have the same area code but the rest of it, including the prefix, may bear no resemblance whatsoever to your current number! Grandma might be able to do the installation (though see my comment below) but I bet she didn't realize that she'll have to notify all her friends and business contacts of her new number!

When they refer to the easy 1-2-3- steps, they neglect to inform you that you must fill out a very confusing registration form before you can do anything. This form does such disconcerting things as ask you to select as an option free outgoing calls. Why would that be an option if the whole point is that you just buy the magicJack and then your telephoning is all free for a year? It also includes a Terms of Sale which again refers to opting for free outgoing service... When you look at FAQ, you're told that to get answers to relevant questions (e.g. are there any times of day that are not free or is the time of the call limited in any way, ) you must look at the Terms of Agreement, but if that info is buried in there somewhere I didn't see it.

To top things off, there is absolutely no direct contact info: no address or email or phone through which you can register a complainy (as opposed to asking how to do X or Y).

I am very, very disappointed in this product and will not recommend it to anyone.

Does not work lousy customer service
I bought Magicjack at a local Radioshack outlet. When calling, the answering party could not hear me repeatedly to several different callers. I got on line with customer service and, to make a long story short, after 8 customer service agents and nearly 9 hours on line with them, we still had the same problem. These people do not know what they are doing and/or their product simply does not work and they are a scam. I am going to return my magicJack this am and if I cannot get my $$$ back, I am filing a complaint with the state division of consumer fraud in Olympia.

Terrible service
After I place a FREE trial order, tried to contact the company to change my order from 2 units to 1. They said they had no record of my order. I did not receive the Confirmation Email promised. As others have experienced, I spent a lot of time with their Online Chat -- went through every issue in excruciating detail. Then I had to be transferred to a "higher level of support" to go through everything again.

The customer service experience was so painful and long that I decided to just cancel the entire order, realizing that I would not have adequate support if I got the product. They couldn't cancel my order because they had no record of it. My credit card company called and said MagicJack tried to charge $94 to my card. So, I contacted them again and went through the same frustrating, time consuming process. They had no record of an order even though they charged my card.

Today I received an email that my order had been shipped. Had to contact Online Chat again only to be told that I could not cancel the order because it had already been sent. Bogus, bogus, bogus. Now, I have to take it up with my credit card company and will probably have to pay shipping to return MJ once it arrives. Like others I've been Jacked.

Unauthorized billing
This was for a telephone unit that I received on a thirty-day trial period. I could not get it to work on my home computers. I returned it one week before the trial period terminated. I mailed it from Ireland. Further, they billed me twice for shipping. The unit has been returned within the trial-period and the charge is unfair and it should be reversed.

Works Fine, I love it. Saving $
I am in awe of the number of idiots posting complaints about MagicJack. Why in the world would someone cancel local phone servive before a trila run with MagicJack. Why would someone buy it if the only have dialup service. These are only a couple of the idiotic complaints I have read on this site. Even if some of the complaints are true...it was only $40; Hell, I lost $200 when SunRocket shut down.

All I can say is that this device is working fine for me. Is it as good as a landline or a full service VOIP; no it is not, but what do you expect for $20/year. I rarely use my landline phone; maybe an incoming call or two per day. So MagicJack to me was an alternative to me instead of spending $400 a year for landline service. I tested MagicJack for 3 months before I disconnected landline service. It works fine. Did I have a couple of quirks, yes. Did I try to call customer service for info and bitch when they weren't there, no. I went online and Googled for information. And guess what I found it, go figure. People the internet has a wealth of information, just try it.

As for my problems with magicjack: everytime I would try to burn a DVD it would pop up magicjack. For some reason its usb drive looks like a CD drive to the computer...so googled it and found out how to disable autorun for that drive letter...now no problems. Also sometimes in the middle of the day it would not work, so I wanted to uninstall/reinstall, but there is no windows uninstall for it; so Google and found out how delete all the files and then I reinstalled in another USB port and all is well. Been working for one month straight w/o any problems. Also do not install it across a wireless network; it will function but way too much delay and sound chopping. About the only complaint I have is I wish I could change the # of rings for voicemail or shut it off so I can get my own answering machine to work within a reasonable number of rings. But it is cool that it can email you when a voicemail is left; it shows up within seconds on my iPhone. All you complainers please get a life. Let me guess you are over 65, moved to Florida because it is cheaper, live in a mobile home to aviod property taxes, and love to bitch about everything especially about everything being better up north; so WTF did you move?

Unauthorized charges
WARNING!! I purchased Magic Jack 6 months ago and it stopped working. The problem is that it is impossible to get customer care. They provide no one to talk to. There are no contact phone numbers. They do have buttons on their site for customer care, but when you click them, they eventually loop you back to the main page. Very frustrating! Go to the site and try to contact someone. I am at my wits end an am giving up... I thought you should know this before recommending it to your viewers.

Service Disrupted
Magicjack disconnected my service due to "overusage". I bought magicjack because I was going to save money as my kids make lots of phone calls. I think this is just a scam to make money on people. When your number of calls reaches a limit, they suspend your service and then ask you to buy minutes, if you want to use their service. I knew there was a catch.
I will be filing a complaints with better business beauro in Dallas/Texas. I recommend everybody does the same to stop this scam.
