Purchased a fairly expensive desk lamp. Looked at these lamps on several web sites. None of them mentioned that the lamps will not work with a standard CFL bulb. The socket on the lamp requires a special bulb with a small pointed tip at the base of the bulb in order to receive power. Standard bulbs will screw into the socket but they won't receive power. The only bulbs that work (though they are nothing special except for the little tip) are $25 EACH. This is unjustifiably many times more expensive than commonly available bulbs.
