On March 10, 2011, a very personable and talkative young man (possibly 23?) came to our door. He seemed to know many of our neighbors and said he was the son of a woman whom we knew lived in our community. He passed himself off as a youth team coach, and said he was selling point shares of magazines and books to raise money for his sports team. He also said that a portion of the sales would provide books for the children at our local children's hospital. Even though he said a couple of things that should have raised questions, he was very persuasive, we had company, and we gave him a check for a partial share. Having second thoughts the next day, we were just about to start making calls when a neighborhood email warning our community of this scam showed up. Several other families had also written checks before one neighbor, the naturally suspicious type, began questioning the young man's statements. After making several phone calls, she determined that he was not who he said he was, and that this was a scam. As this was late on Friday, we sent an email and made a call to our finance center, and the stop pay was to go in on Monday for our check. Unfortunately, the stop pay and the deposit apparently crossed, and our check was cashed. We are in the process (probably futile) of trying to get our money back. We are normally not easily taken in, but just got caught on this one. Watch out for this type of scam--we are just finding out that there are complaints about Marquis Fufillment Company from across the country!
