Not only do they automatically renew without permission, with no notice, they make you call their "Automated Service" where they make it nearly impossible to unsubscribe, you cannot reach a human being, and they deduct fairly hefty service charges when you do finally manage cancellation. They ask you "trick" questions, which make it SOUND like you are cancelling, but if you answer "yes" you are actually EXTENDING your subscription for another three months. What an incredible rip off. Additionally, I had to dial into the same horrible machine four times: once for each magazine they automatically renewed by charging my credit card.
