Promotion fraud
As I entered my local Amityville Stop n' Shop I was stopped by a man at a desk set up by the entrance. He offered me a 'free, no commitment'trial subscription to Newsday and that if I did I would be entered to win a raffle for a one hundred dollar gift card to Stop n' Shop. I asked several times if it was really free, if I would have any responsibilty to them, etc and I was told explicitly that it was totally free with no strings attatched. I then signed what I was told was a 'sign up sheet'. Fast forward about 6 months later I get a collections letter stating that I owe Newsday $63.00 for my 'free trial'. I call them up and tell them what happened and they tell me that even though I was flat out lied to, I was still obligated to pay them as I had signed a 'contract' (ie 'sign up sheet' according to the guy that dragged me into this.) They were very rude, uncaring, and acted as if they had a script to handle the situation (i've seen similar complaints about this promotion so i'm sure i wasn't the only one calling). I'm a college student and can't just come up with this kind of money out of nowhere, I was just excited about the possibility of $100 to buy food. I'm losing $63 and now my credit is damaged due to this bill that I should never have been charged going to collections (I never received any warnings from Newsday prior to the collection bill.)
