Path of Exile 2 0.5 Martial Artist Ascendancy Class Worth Trying
Path of Exile 2's Return of the Ancients 0.5 update added a lot of new content, but one of the biggest surprises has been the Martial Artist ascendancy for the Monk. Instead of playing like a traditional melee fighter that simply rushes enemies and spams attacks, the Martial Artist mixes mobility, spiritual techniques, defensive stacking, and "ghost" attacks into a much more stylish combat system. It feels fast, flexible, and surprisingly different from most melee builds currently in PoE 2.

The standout mechanic is definitely Hollow Form. With these abilities, the Monk can project spectral copies of themselves across the battlefield. These astral versions repeat your attacks before disappearing, which creates a combat flow that feels smooth and almost cinematic. You are constantly moving, repositioning, and layering attacks through your duplicates instead of standing still trading hits. In practice, it makes the Martial Artist feel less like a heavy brawler and more like a martial-arts fighter darting through enemies while clones finish combos behind them.

The ascendancy also has a strong defensive side. Passives like Way of the Mountain reward you for controlling enemies and avoiding damage, building up stacks that improve survivability and increase your overall damage output. Another key node, Way of the Stonefist, changes the way gloves work entirely by turning them into "Fists of Stone," converting gear stats into stronger melee-focused bonuses. Combined together, these passives make the Martial Artist feel durable without slowing down its aggressive playstyle.

Runic Meridians add another layer of customization. This system allows you to add extra rune sockets directly onto your armor pieces, opening up a huge amount of build variety. Since the 0.5 update introduced over a hundred new runes, players have plenty of room to experiment with different setups depending on whether they want more damage, survivability, or utility. For players who enjoy theorycrafting and min-maxing builds, this part of the ascendancy is probably going to be one of the biggest highlights.

What makes the Martial Artist especially enjoyable is how naturally it scales through progression. Early leveling feels smooth because the Hollow Form mechanics already provide mobility and strong damage without needing expensive gear. Later on, once better crafted items and rune combinations start coming together, the build becomes much more powerful. A lot of early community testing suggests the ascendancy benefits heavily from the new crafting systems added in 0.5, especially when optimizing rune sockets and glove modifiers for endgame content.

The overall combat rhythm is what really separates the Martial Artist from other melee options. Instead of focusing only on raw attack speed or survivability, you are constantly balancing positioning, clone timing, rune effects, and defensive stacks. Boss fights become much more interactive because you are thinking about where to place Hollow Forms, when to refresh buffs, and how to stay aggressive without losing momentum. It creates a style of gameplay that feels active almost every second.

For players who enjoy melee combat but want something more technical and stylish than a standard slam or strike build, the Martial Artist is one of the most interesting additions in Path of Exile 2 so far. Between the astral duplicate mechanics, rune customization, and defensive scaling, the ascendancy offers a fresh take on the Monk class while still fitting naturally into PoE 2's darker, faster combat system. If the idea of punching through enemies with spiritual clones and heavily customized gear sounds appealing, the Martial Artist is absolutely worth trying in the 0.5 update.
