Peoples Bank charges a standard $8.00 monthly maintenance fee. For using their issued MASTER MONEY debit card an additional $1.00 montly fee. For using a NON-PEOPLES ATM, $2.50 per withdrawal (in addition to surcharges from ATM). All of these fees are taken out in a 7 day "window" from your checking account (i.e. '3rd week of the month'). This makes your check register extremely difficult to balance, however the nature of my complaint stems from this. Recently I made 2 POS debit purchases (they cleared the terminal, said money was put on hold in my account). Two days following the excessive (varying) monthly fee (this time $38) was imposed and removed from my account. During this process my two POS purchases were listed as "processing" through their on-line system. Peoples United Bank then "cleared" the two POS purchases resulting in two (2) overdraft charges equaling $68.00. Previously the bank has cleared all "items" presented for payment BEFORE processing THEIR montly fee, however in March they changed their policy, thus removing any left integrity for their customers account. I am outraged--as was my teller, who without asking me reversed one of the charges without hesitating, and apologizing to me for all the problems the bank has been going through.
