I opened a Suntrust checking account online. After a year or so, I no longer needed it. I live in Alabama and there are no Suntrust banks in my state. So I tried to find a site online where I could close my account. It had been inactive for several months and I knew there were no outstanding checks. I could find nothing online to accommodate me. So I called a Suntrust bank in the neighboring city of Pensacola, Florida, about 60 miles from my home. I was told that if I wanted to close my account, I would need to send a letter and that there would be a $25.00 charge to close the account via mail!!! I explained that I live in Alabama and the nearest Suntrust bank is 60 miles away and with gas being so expensive, I did not think it feasible to travel 120 miles round trip to close an account. I explained that I had opened the account online and would think that I could close it online. I was told "NO, you will "have to" come into one of our branches or close the account by mail. So much for "customer service". ...no more Suntrust for me.
