Vonage Reviews

ex employee
I recently worked for Vonage as a salesman, they are a huge scam and i would not trust a word they are saying! I signed up for my free account because i was an employee, well when i decided to cancel they told me one thing then another. Then they told me they lost my device and i would have a cancellation fee even though as an employee you are not supposed to have that. I know all the ins and the outs of Vonage so please email me and i would be happy to tell you how to get your money back and how to get out of this Giant scam. i am going to use my resources which are thousands and thousands of vonage customers and email them and tell them all about how vonage is a scam and they screwed me. i will be sending the email in five days if someone from Vonage doesnt email me with an idea on how to make this right!

disconnection fee
I just cancelled vonage after a year and a half with them. I do not use my home phone and did not need it any longer. They cancelled the service and went on to explain that they would need to charge a $39.99 termination fee because I was cancelling less than 2 years. I pointed out that their terms of service of their website states that termination fees would only be charged for accounts cancelled before one year of service. They said that was only for accounts after May 2009 (although it says nothing about that in the terms of service). Ridiculous!

Rip off
It will seem hard to believe but trust me, VONAGE is a RIP-OFF. My latest trouble with them came several months after I had finally cancelled my service with them (and paying outrageous cancellation fees to cancel a bad service). Well, long after I had cancelled my service a friend of mine (very stubborn) decided he wanted to open an account with VONGAE, although I tried my best to convince him otherwise. I offered to give him my adapter, which was only taking up space at home and bringing back bad memories. To my surprise and dismay, VONAGE did not allow him to activate the service with that equipment. They said that since it had already been activated by someone else in the past it could no longer be used. In other words, when you buy a unit from them it comes blocked so that it cannot be used with any other provider other than VONAGE, and now I find out it can't even be used with VONAGE itself, as is the case here. They sell you a useless piece of equipment for any purposes, either with them or anyone else. I was never told that this was a disposable item that I was buying, that it could be activated only once and that after that it would be garbage. I am sure this would do a really good class action law suit.

Scam charges
Due to employment issues I was forced to cancel my home phone service with Vonage prior to my year conatract. The only thing they show as a penalty on their website is a 39.99 disconnect fee before that year. They are charging me 112.00 and did not even credit my current months charges. Am filing complaints with BBB and the Attorney Generals Office. If these charges are accurate they were hidden very well in the contract

Awful company
On May 16, 2008 I transferred my phone service from AT&T to Vonage phone service. It took them about 2 days to port my phone number from AT&T to vonage. Prior to transferring to Vonage. I asked the sales rep if it would work with my alarm system. She asked which system. I told her ADT. She said it would work with ADT. About a week later I received a letter from ADT requesting I test the system. It didn't work. After a week of trying to get the alarm system to work with the Vonage phone I gave up. I called Vonage to cancel my service. They told me I needed to contact my former phone service (AT&T) to get my phone reconnected with them. It took Vonage two weeks to port my number back to AT&T. That put me two days over my 30 day trial period with Vonage. They ended up charging my credit card for a total of $171.44 for service and disconnect fees. They refused to take back their reconditioned Vonage connection box for a partial refund.

Vonage customer service was contacted by phone and email many times. They refused to let me talk to a supervisor.

They lied to me about my alarm system being compatible with the Vonage phone system to get my business. Then they dragged their feet porting my phone # back to AT&T so I went 2 days over the 30 day trial period which ended up costing me $171.44.

Liars
Everything they say in a lie.
Initiation fee - 24.99 ; $37 was charged to my account why?

Number Port - 1)They said they could port my existing no; Lie, they gave me a random number, One said they cannot port the number, other said they need 10 days to port the number (this expires the try period)

Cancellation - 45; Charged extra for cancellation; 14 days to return the equipment if this paid else 45 days???

Terrible company
My husband decided to have Vonage installed at our home, hoping to save money. They told us we could keep our number and that it would be transferred within a couple of days. We called after a couple of days to find out about the number and they said they were having problems with the transfer and that it would take longer than expected. At that point, my husband said just forget it and cancelled the service request. We already had their equipment and returned it after a phone call to get the address for the return. That was on a Thursday. The following Saturday my daughter called and said our phone was not working. It turns out that Vonage went ahead with the number transfer and closed out our account with Time Warner which left us with no phone service (because we had already returned their equipment). When we called to find out why they didn't cancel the service as we requested prior to the number transfer, they basically called us liars and said that we had never stopped the service. There is a lot more to this story regarding bad customer service and rude behavior. Also, we now have to wait two-weeks to get our service back with TimeWarner (which was never supposed to have been stopped). I Suppose we'll be lucky if we ever see the cost of the equipment credited back to our charge card. Oh well, live and learn. Never use Vonage because that business is going right down the tubes anyway and probably won't be around for another year. Read about it on the internet.

Scam artists
Signed up for Vonage returned first and second equipment that did not work within the 60 day trial period, they refused to give me a refund instead sent me to collections with a $142 bill, they claimed they never got both equipments almost a year later even though i have post office receipts that shows i sent them back priority mail to their warehouse. Spoke to over a dozen reps/managers to no avail. Instead of a refund i have a collections bill?

Terrible service
Called Vonage on 24 June to order device and sign up for service. Recieved device on 1 july sometime after 5 PM. Installed device on 2 July and called in to activate service. From day one had problems with voice and computer systems. Called repeatedly saying I had Problems. Techs repeatedly said that it was a cable company problem and not Vonage. Even with the Vonage device disconnected and my laptop connected directly to the cable modem they claimed it was the cable companies fault. Never could get good phone and computer hook up with the Vonage device in the system.

SCAM VONAGE FEES - DO NOT BELIEVE THEM
Few items to consider before you sign up "without contract"

1. Your $24.99 plan is more like $36.99 - they (similar to the people they criticize such as ATT and Verizon) charge all the fees and taxes and forget to mention how much it is going to be. So if you are paying your phone company $40 bills for your phone service - this is exactly what you will be paying with Vonage.

2. "No Contract" means that is you cancel before the end of a full year - they will charge you $80 for the crappy device they sent you and $40 for canceling the account. After 1 year they will charge you "only" $40 to cancel.

3. Their outsourced customer service department is always a "pleasure" to deal with. Similar to what Dell was before they moved some of their reps to US. You feel like you are talking to a robot that keeps repeating the same sentence no matter what you ask them.

All in all - no different from any other telco - so the question is WHY GO THRU THE TROUBLE OF SWITCHING?

Let's recap - same price, same features, same crappy customer service, contract or I guess a virtual contract...hmmm...
