After a year of suspecting my Panasonic answer machine was sporadically not recording messages when callers thought they were leaving messages I started screening calls and found very occasionally it indeed did not record. Although out of warranty I was very angry I may have missed business calls as customers later told me they had left messages which never recorded and sent it back.
