Norcross Police Department (Examining the impact of media consumption)
"WE THE PEOPLE" February 5, 2011
The media portrayal of policing is juxtaposed with both positive and negative representations. As a result, a complex relationship exists between media consumption and public attitudes towards the police. The purpose of this study was to test the impact that media consumption had on attitudes toward police misconduct and discrimination. The findings revealed that heavy consumers of network news were more likely to believe that police misconduct was a frequent event. This was especially true for minority respondents. Similarly, minority... read full review »

Norcross Police Department (Need leadership change)
"WE THE PEOPLE" February 5, 2011
Legislative control Legislators could reevaluate laws that create the potential for corruption. Such a reassessment would be based on the recognition that a major portion of police corruption is an outgrowth of laws that criminalize drug use, prostitution, and gambling. Any serious attempt to fight police corruption must wrestle with the decriminalization issue. Decriminalization involves removing the criminal label from victimless crimes by legalizing and regulating them. Decriminalization would contribute significantly to improving the... read full review »

Norcross Police Department (Keeping a close eye)
"WE THE PEOPLE" February 5, 2011
Rooting out police corruption When police controls break down and a scandal occurs, special investigating commissions can mobilize public opinion and rally public support for anticorruption and antiviolence reforms. Commissions get information from the police department, pinpoint where the internal controls of the police have failed, and recommend changes in policy. The problem with these commissions is that they usually disappear after finishing their reports. Paul Chevigny asserts that continuing independent auditors would be more... read full review »

Many of the biggest stations and newspapers, however, are owned by large media corporations, which in turn, are often subsidiaries of enormous conglomerates. The concentration of ownership has been increasing. In 1981, 46 corporations controlled more than half the circulation and revenues of daily... read full review »

Effects of the Media on Politics
"WE THE PEOPLE" February 5, 2011
Effects of the Media on Politics Scholars once believed that the mass media have only a minimal effect on politics, but that view is now discredited. The media do make a difference. They have an impact on public opinion and on policymaking in a number of different ways. Several studies, for example, have demonstrated that the media play an important role in setting the policy agenda. The topics that get the most coverage in the media are the same ones that most people say are the "most important problems" facing the country... read full review »

veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
"WE THE PEOPLE" February 2, 2011
Reuters reports that 20% of the homeless in the United States are veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The United States government determined that somewhere between 200, 000 and 500, 000 Americans were then homeless.[2] The number of homeless is reported to have risen since that... read full review »
