I felt like I was reading our story as I read what you and your wife are going through. My husband has been unemployeed for 2 years so we took all the same steps as you. Well long story short he was just turned down for an insruance agent's job as we found out that Wells Fargo has our mortgage in default on our credit report, not modification and what I was told by the Rep.
