I have been a customer with AT&T for years, my account has always been in good standing.
I called AT&T to let them know that I would be canceling my service. I was no longer under contract but I wanted to be sure that there would be no disconnect fee's and I also asked of there was anything that I should do with my account prior to disconnecting. I also asked if I would receive a refund for the unused portion of the month which I had pre-paid for. The answer was YES, I would receive a refund based on the unused days remaining in my billing cycle . The day came when I called AT&T to disconnect, once again I confirmed that I would be receiving a refund, the rep confirmed this and stated that I would receive a partial credit, she calculated that I should expect about $75.00 to be credited back to my credit card. Weeks later, no refund. 1 month later... no refund. I called AT&T again and again I was told that I would be receiving a refund however it would apply to my next credit card statement. Another month later... no refund. I called AT&T AGAIN, this time I was told, "I'm sorry Miss, I don't know what you are talking about, we don't refund unused portions of a statement cycle for customers who are canceling their service."
To this I responded, "Why have at least 4 AT&T customer service representatives told me otherwise?"
The rep replied, "I do not know, they were incorrect. You will not be receiving a refund."
If I had been told this from the beginning, I would have kept my service for another 2 weeks before disconnecting. I called my credit card company and filed a dispute charge, they agreed that it was a legitimate dispute and removed the charge from my bill. Now AT&T has come after me for the $75.00... if I don't pay it, I am quite sure that it will end up as a derogatory mark on my credit but frankly, they don't deserve it... they scammed me and I am going to do what I can to fight it.
