Got a letter on 'Avery Financial Inc' letterhead claiming we had won $125000 sweepstakes. A check for $4980 was enclosed. The letter said that we had to call Mr Phillip Adams before cashing the check. First real clue that this was a scam was the company address on the check. The company is supposedly based in North Grosvenordale, CT. Having lived in CT for a good number of years, I knew there was no such place. We didn't bother to spend the money to make the long distance phone call, but immediately checked 'Avery Financial' on-line and were brought to the Ripoff Report site. Obviously, we were not the only targets. Needless to say, don't try to cash the check you get. I'm going to report the scam to our state consumer safety commission.
