Diablo 4's Mythic Chat Gem isn't the kind of prize you'll find by clearing a dungeon over and over. The hunt starts in the open world, where a particular Waking Nightmare Portal can lead you to a quiet room and a rare drop. It's an unusual addition to the pool of D4 items, and part of its appeal is that you might stumble across it while doing something else entirely. You'll still need some luck once you get inside.

Finding the Cornerstone

Keep an eye out for a portal called Diablo Hellfire The Cornerstone. It can appear during open-world activities, and it's the one you want for this hunt. Step through and you'll enter a small, diamond-shaped room with no enemies waiting for you. Look for the World's Cornerstone in the middle and interact with it. The object can drop the Chat Gem, although it isn't guaranteed. You may also find other high-level loot and runes, so an unsuccessful visit doesn't have to feel like a wasted trip.

Where to Look

Whisper events are a good place to start. Open your map and look for pink event icons with a triangle inside, then work through nearby activities. Helltides give you another reason to stay active in the open world. The following comparison keeps the main options handy: Activity What to do Whisper events Complete marked activities Helltides Clear enemies as you explore Special enemies Defeat Hellborne and Treasure Goblins None of these options guarantees the right portal, so check what appears as you go.

What the Gem Actually Does

At first glance, the Mythic gem looks like an ordinary Crude Sapphire. Its description offers little explanation, either. Socket it into a ring, amulet, or the seasonal Leoric's Crown, and you may notice messages appearing in your chat log. Some are familiar calls from the old Diablo 2 interface, including "Chat Gem Activated," "Chat Gem Deactivated," and "Perfect Gem Activated." There's also the occasional "Mooooooo." Number sequences can appear too, though their meaning remains a subject of player speculation. If you're expecting a straightforward combat bonus, this probably isn't that sort of find.

Making the Hunt Part of Your Routine

You don't have to spend every session chasing the portal. Pick up Whispers you'd normally complete, visit an active Helltide, and deal with special enemies when you spot them. World Bosses have also been associated with portal appearances, but the original guide recommends concentrating on events and Helltide activity. Players browsing D4 items for sale might be curious about the gem, but finding the Cornerstone yourself gives you a shot at the drop while you play. It's a small piece of Diablo history, with a mystery that still gives players something to talk about.
