HughesNet Reviews

Fraudulent company
When we decided to move to the country, it took us nearly a month to find an Internet Service Provider who could help us. If you are outside the city limits, and surrounded by trees, you soon find that there are very few options other then satellite. We were assured by HughesNet that although there might be interruptions for weather, our speeds and downloads would be up to DSL capacity. After paying nearly $1, 000 to get hooked up (equipment and installation charges) we soon found out that there were some 'missing pieces' they left out of the sales pitch!!

The company uses Fair Access Policy act to limit the amount of download you can receive over a 24 hour period. We've never experienced the performance demonstrated in the commercials. Additionally, the service has gotten worse and worse until we have decided to just go get wireless cards.

I can't understand why the FCC or some other government agency doesn't come in and require that they tell the truth about their service. Sure, tell people 'if you live in a remote place - we are it!', but don't act like the speed will be the same as normal service.

Calling their Customer Service line gets you someone located in India at a call center. I feel badly for these people, as they probably have no idea what we are comparing our experiences to. They also have no power to issue credits or to fix anything. I've gotten through to someone in the U.S a couple of times, but only after waiting a week for a call back. It's amazing how they can get away with this!

If you are in the county and need service, go get a wireless card!

Scam Rip Off
If you don't believe what I am about to right I suggest you google HUGHESNET and see for yourself. I have had it for 6 months and I have never had so much crap from anything like this in my life. First you see the commercial promising you FASTER service for those who cannot get high speed/broadband. Anyone can get high speed they say. Well for about 60 minutes a day it does put out a decent speed. After 6 months if the wind blows and moves your satellite a millimeter than you must pay 125$ for someone to come and tweak it for you each and every time. Each day if you are on any longer than an hour it slows down to slower than dial up for 24 hours. Doesn't matter if you are downloading music or just surfing after about 60 minutes you are done. Thinking about Hughes Net for online college classes forget about it, its NOT DEPENDABLE in any way. Downloading movies? Ha that would take you 1 week to get 1 movie. YOUTUBE, you might get 7 or 8 viewed before you are slow as a snail. I have reported this to the better business bureau our state senators and reported this all over the Internet. I have even sent e-mails to channels on TV who run their ads. So far to no avail. The stimulus package was supposed to send money out to rural areas to upgrade systems so people in rural areas could get broadband and of course that got depleted. Its like doesn't the GOV does not realize that if people has a good internet service in rural areas they could get an online education, do job searches and educate themselves? ( Hell they have it in South America but not South East OHIO etc) No one cares and no one will do anything about HUGHESNET ripping people off. 60$ a month for nothing and I mean nothing. Open up about 10 email pics and you are done for 24 hours.
Don't forget once you accept their service you are stuck with it for 2 years. So hear me now DO NOT GET HUGHESNET. Try Direct TV or Dish Network or wait it out to see if things get upgraded in your area. You shouldn't have to pay 125$ every time the wind blows.

Various
Hughesnet is the provider of last resort. These are the main complaints.

1. Fair Access Policy is poorly articulated and completely out of date with modern high speed internet needs. While it would seem that a satellite link is a sophisticated technology, the severe limits of their FAP render their services archaic.

2. Service is a joke. Their favorite trick is to not spend any time actually understanding a request, but replying to an question that has not been asked, usually with a response that is equivalent to a no. Using off-shore reps means they are hard to understand and do not understand you. They are often surley and condescending.

3. Cost. They are high end and considering FAP, they are a terrible value.

I've been a customer since 2000 because I really have no other choices (a long story short).

Flee! Run! Avoid at all costs!

Terrible company
So, we signed up for HughesNet several years ago, when they were still DirecWay. We paid the huge amount for equipment, almost $800, and the outrageous service fees. We were okay with the service for the first year and a half but as time passed on the service was getting slower and slower until it reached dial-up speeds.

We decided it was in our best interest to cancel the service and look for something else, so we did. After two months of being on dial up, the only thing available in our area, we called them back and signed back up, paying the $25 reconnect fee. After two months of the same old slow, pitiful, service, a storm came through our area and knocked our dish off.

We called the next day to have a technician to come out to reset the dish. After speaking on the phone with someone you can't half understand for 1+ hour, we were informed that the only we could have someone come to our house and reset the dish was to ...BUY A NEW MODEM!!!

The modem has nothing to do with the fact that the dish was out of whack?!?!?!?! They said that we could buy a refurbished model of the current modem for $125(which we had already paid OUTRAGEOUS amounts for.) If the modem did not fix the issue THEN we could pay the technician MORE money to resent the dish.

This is just their way of making you give them more money for their pitiful service.

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING DIRECWAY OR HUGHESNET, FORGET THEY EXIST!!!

fair access policy
Hughesnet offers terrible customer service. They don't explain the Fair Access Policy before you sign up. If you use McAfee or try to look at any u-tube videos, or even play an on-line game, you go over your 200 mb limit in 24 hours, and then you can't get on the internet at all for 24 hours. They tell you to use a download manager to only download between 3 and 6 a.m., but they won't suggest a download manager that works, and I can't get it to work! It's extremely frustrating, but I'm locked into a 2 year contract. I want out of the contract!

terrible service
I've had this 'service' for several years. Living way down a dirt road, my only other option is dial up.
When it was direcway I didn't have any problems. When Hughes took over the service got slower, sporadic, and the ridiculous Fair Access Policy plays havoc with my time on the computer.
I do not download movies or even music. The most I do is update programs and play a few youtube videos now and then.
So, I get punished for using the internet too much.. punishment is even slower service. You wait around 24-36 hrs. for them to let you out of the corner.
When you call it is hell. Neither of us can understand what the other is saying.. and bottom line, they just tell me that I am downloading hundreds of MB during the middle of the night. I turn off and UNPLUG my computer and my modem every night.
It is a rip off and we who live in the country are being held hostage by these money mongers. 64.99 a month for a lousy connection. I cannot wait til the next innovation comes along and shoots hughes out of the sky!

Awful company
When I signed up for hughesnet, there was no mention of any restrictions on how much you can download. I even told the salesman that I used remote desktop to monitor video security cameras at another location. The salesman told me that there are no restrictions but the speed, which can be upgraded for only $10.00 more per month. But the speed I signed up for should be enough to use remote desktop. The speed is OK for it, but after using remote desktop for a little more than 1 hour, I violated their fair access policy. After violating this policy, they throttle your speed down to less than dial-up. When I called regarding the slow down, they explained to me that I can upgrade to a plan that is double the price I signed up for ($120.00), and that would increase my download threshold to 500 mb per day. My original plan was for $60.00 and only allowed 200 mb per day. If I cancel after only 2 days, I am out the money for the installation, which is $335.00 !! I can not effectively use the service even if I upgrade my plan. If anyone knows of a class action lawsuit, please contact me. If any lawyers reading this would like to start the class action suit, please contact me as well. I just don't know how to go about it, but something needs to be done. The policy is way too restrictive, and with the flash and video content popping up all over the net, it's only going to effect more and more people as time goes on. The max amount that you can download in a day is equal to playing an online game for 1-2 hours, or using remote desktop for 1-2 hours!!

Sorry I purchased this service!
We purchased HughesNet satellite internet Pro-plus plan for our small business and home use after years of slow (but reliable) dial-up. We spent nearly $700 for the equipment and installation - 2 weeks after installation a rain storm came through and it stopped working. I spent hours on the phone with Tech support and Advanced Tech Support only to be told that "the satellite was down - give it an hour". I called two hours later and the second ATS guy spent over an hour on the phone with me trouble shooting only to tell me that the equipment on the dish was bad. The system is suppose to be sealed but sometimes they aren't sealed good enough and rain gets in and ruins them. He said he would issue a request for service. I heard nothing for two days! Finally on the 3rd day I called our local HughesNet sales office - thank god for them, they were shocked (allegedly) that this happened and are sending a tech today to replace our box. She also told me that no request for service had been submitted from ATS.

Before I called our local company, I tried HughesNet again and asked about a refund - I was told that we would only get $200 back within 30 days of installation and only IF the equipment was found to be in working order. Matt - this particular customer service rep. was NOT happy that ATS told me that the box must have gotten water in it and ruined the board. Matt was also rude and didn't seem to care if we stayed with the company or not.

I tried to call the Corporate office but no one answered. I let it ring for 10 minutes! We are sorry that we purchased HughesNet and now know that we should have gone with our cell phone company. HughesNet takes your money and then treats you terribly - and with the equipment terminating service after one rain - we are in trouble with this company but feel that we have no choice but to keep it or we're simply out nearly $700 bucks!

Don't go with HughesNet if you have any other option - I have two words of warning - Customer Fraud!

Online scam
I was told a price on the phone because I live out in the country I needed faster service than dial up. Well they convinced me It would be wonderful, well it's not, it was slower than my dial up, and if I wanted better service I had to pay more for it. Also if you use your computer very much it won't work for you. Please don't fall for this scam, because I was not told this information until I signed a contract with them, I canceled in 30 day's and they still want 197.00.
