tricky charges
Did a person lookup in January for $0.95. OK. Got an email confirming the charge and new, first-time registration.
March credit card statement showed up with TWO $19.95 charges from them. There was no confirming email, no notice of any kind. For the first time since January I signed onto Intelius. My account showed zero usage, as expected.
The reps explanation was I had clicked on a button on the site ("next to person look up") that gave me we id protection. There is no reason I would sign up for that and I do not believe I did. If so, it was inadvertent and due to some tricky and misleading information on the site. The rep canceled one charge, but said could not do so with the other since it was not "within 7 days" (whatever that means).
Their web site has a hidden page, ".../manage, " to cancel service. This is only found by submitting a 'how do i cancel email' or calling customer service.
There is some kind of scam and fraud going on here. Beware of this organization - especially since they seem to be taking over web people searches. Be VERY careful using their site - misleading and tricky.

Scam
I called the telephone number provided by my credit card company. After about a three minute wait the representative told me how I agreed to the Ident. add on during my one information search (which did not provide any usable information). When I said this to the representative, he said that is what you get for .95 cents. How Professional. I had not rec'd any email or information, just a charge for $19.95. I asked if there were some sort of box that you checked to agree to accept the monthly add on, but I was told that I had a choice of paying .95 cents which is 51% off or $1.95 full price. I selected the .95 cent price and that automatically enrolled me in the monthly program. So had I selected the 1.95 service, I would have saved $19.00 hmmmmm. Sounds strange to me. I feel this is a scam and if they are providing a true desirable service, they would not need to stoop to such a low level to obtain customers and membership/subscription.
Provide a desirable service and you will have happy customers. Scam them into being charged a monthly fee and you have people like myself posting on every possible place to report the poor business ethics of this company.

Scam
I went through Intelius to look up a phone number that had been used to reserve a hotel room using our company name. The web site said I would be charged .99 for limited information. I then looked up another phone number that was used for the same room reservation and again said I would be charged .99 which I agreed to and gave my company credit card again. I just received my bill I was charged .99 ten 4.49 for the second number and for Int*INPROTECT Monitor services $19.95. I just hung up the phone with a VERY rude woman that informed me that I agreed to this MONTHLY CHARGE but should would cancel at this time but Would not give me back my 19.95. Do NOT use this service!!

Scam , do not use
I when on this website intelius.com last month to do a reverse phone number search, I was told I would be charged $4.95 for the search but that if it did not come back with any information I would be refunded.
To no avail nothing came back in the search and I was told I would not be charged but if I put in my email address they would send me any information that came available on the number I searched.
Needless to say, this month I see a $9.95 charge AND a $19.95 charge! I called customer service and was told that they would refund my $9.95 but could not refund the MEMBERHSIP FEE of $19.95 that I supposively signed up for when I entered my email address.
Upon further investigation I was charge $19.95 last month also! In the end Randy refunded me the $9.95 and says he will refund one of the membership fees of $19.95 which I have yet to receive so I am out $40.00 for a $4.95 search!!! BEWARE THIS SITE IS A SCAM!!!

Unathuorized charges
Was getting unwanted, unfamiliar calls & wanted to investigate. Used website PeopleLookup.com for search, claimed they charged $0.95 for a 7-day trial and charged nothing if no results.
Used service once with results, got e-mail stating I would be billed $0.95. Tried a second time w/no results, but received e-mail stating I would be billed $4.95.
My bank statement, however, showed a charge of $19.95 (a full membership). Tried e-mail asking to cancel membership & refund the $19.95. Response said their "service isn't free" and they apologized for any “misunderstanding".
Wrote several more times and tried calling (on hold for over 10 min. & hung up). Only received e-mail stating membership was cancelled, no refund. Wrote again stating without refund I would submit complaints of internet fraud. I haven't heard anything back, but received another charge of $4.95. Complaints filed w/FTC, FBI & local police depts.

Intelius complaint

Idenity ProtectionTrial
Without my request or agreement, I was signed up for Intelius Identity Protect for a 7 day free trial and was told that I needed to cancel the service within the trial period or I would be charged monthly fee thereafter. There was a website to contact to cancel, but it didn't exist. Fortunately I had written down the customer service phone number (it was not on any information I printed out). The representative finally agreed to cancel the service, but continued to offer me another free trial. When I explained my complaint, she said many others had made the same complaint and Intelius was trying to work on the problem. And to think they want me to sign up for service when they can't figure out how to put simple yes/no boxes for customer response.

Posting wrong information
Intelius people search has listed me and my address with a person named Nathaniel Brown. Nathaniel Brown is a con-artist. He has been writing bad checks all over Chicago for years and using my address. I am also not related to Dolores, Wendy, Terrance, Jill, Terrence, Terra or Mark Brown. They are publishing false information about me. Intelius is defaming me by listing me as a relative of Nathaniel Brown. Wendy is my neighbor. Terrance was her husband and he is dead. I am not related to these people either. I don't even know who the other people are. Intelius is libeling my name when they associated with a crook. It's bad enough that creditors and stores call here looking for N. Brown. I tell them to get his driver's license. At one point I had to put a message on my answering machine to warn people about N. Brown. Sears had just opened up and I went to charge something. Up comes Nathaniel's name with my address. I told the clerk to flag the name. I just don't need Intelius publishing false information.
