I first put $20 on a calling card with CelticTel.com in Dec 2008. I only call one older relative (she has no email/Skype account) in Ireland at Christmas and her birthday, so a few months will go by before I call again. Inevitably, when I try to make a call it says the "card has expired". It can take a couple of days of phone calls to unexpire it.
