After using verizon wireless for the past 10 years, I recently switched to a prepaid phone (Tracfone). I rarely use my phone and didn't want the monthly bills anymore. After having my number ported to Tracfone, I called Verizon Wireless to have my service disconnected. After 30 minutes of trying to get my service terminated he came to the conclusion that he couldn't disconnect my service at that time and I would be required to pay for service until the end of the month.
