The day before I traveled to China to adopt a special needs toddler, I called American Express to let them know I would be using their credit card SOLELY (and no other card) while in China for 15 days. (to earn miles, of course!) A week and a half later I tried to use my card, which had a very high credit limit, at my hotel in Guangzhou. The charge was denied and I was informed that I was over the limit by $300 ! Sure there was a mixup, I called AmEx, who told me they had LOWERED MY CREDIT LIMIT BY OVER $13, 000 WHILE ON MY TRIP!!
