I had been forced to change my flight multiple times with each time paying a penalty for the change. This happened until I realized when I could not choose the dates I wanted even though they were just a couple of weeks out. I had called and they told me that the ticket had a one year validity from the initial purchase and this was a policy implemented after my initial purchase.
