When we redid our kitchen last year we bought a new 'highly rated' KitchenAid compactor. We had 2 compactors previously, and each went 8+ years without a single repair. This one is 18 months old and is broken again after being repaired 5 times!! The first two times it was the switch that needed to be replaced. The third time it made a very loud thumping noise which was very worrisome. The fourth and fifth times the main gear (which is only plastic!!) broke.
