I used a generic scan tool and the code was P0340 -- the camshaft position sensor malfunction. I put a new crankshaft position sensor and new spark plugs and wires and ignition coil. I have a 2001 Chevrolet Impala LS that I purchased new. At 40, 000 miles of easy driving. The transmission went out and cost $3, 000 to replace. I did NOT go with a GM remanufactured transmission. There were no updates from GM to upgrade the weak internals for this transmission which has had known weaknesses for years. My advice is to not buy a Chevrolet Impala. At 46, 000 miles, rack and pinion failed - no warranty... so my expense. The emission system was faulty which they did cover under warranty. The next problem was with a shifting cable which failed while I was vacationing in Myrtle Beach, SC. I made it home but had to pay out of pocket for a new shifter cable. I had to replace the right rear window regulator last month. Yesterday I cracked that left rear window and to my amazement it would not go up again. That regulator is gone too.
