Apparently a charge to my debit card for $87.47 put my account over $83.08. This was the last Actual charge on my account on 4/07. According to compass accounting practices since this was a larger debit it was posted before other debits, 9 other debits to be exact. compass charged my account 9 NSF fees for $38. There was a deposit of $500 posted on this day also but according to compass, deposits do not count until all debits have cleared. the wierd part is there is a debit for $14.58 posted after the deposit. 9 $38 nsf fees posted on 4/08. Of coarse the fees posted first. Then more charges posted this day and everything cleared but the fees eating my $500. On 4/09 anothe nsf fee for $38 appeared for who knows what. A $300 deposit posted on this day. This fee and for other debits each under $10 resulted in in 4 $38 nsf fees posting first on 4/10. 3 debits for under $10 were assessed fees. 4/11 3 more $38 nsf fees posted and a $3 dollar debit which resulted in another fee. A $360 deposit was posted on this day, but of coarse deposits don't count until debits.4/14 one nsf fee posted 6 debits of which 4 were assessed fees. 4/15 4 fees 2 debits of coarse both were assessed fees. 4/16 2 fees and 1 deposit for $170. 4/18 1 draft on account which results in $38 fee on 4/21. On 4/21 a $45 overdraft fee was accessed. On 4.22 a large deposit was automatically made of which $371 was taken by fees. On 4/07 a $83.08 overdraft cost me 26 $38 nsf fees and a $45 od fee. The same day a deposit was posted that should have covered this whole mess. I called compass 10 times but each time I was told that these were legitimate bank charges. I plan on picketing the bank that the account was opened at. I plan on calling every news station in town. Banks were supposed to keep our money safe not keep our money. I am thinking about buying a safe and going cash only.No money in the banks means no Banks. Compass is supposed to be rebating my ATM fees and I have never seen a rebate. Compass doesn't care about their customers they only care about the customers money.

Don't be fooled by Compass Bank's "free" credit check
In early June, 2007, I received a letter in the mail from the bank I had used for the last couple of years, Compass Bank. The letter offerred a free credit report to me for just replying to it, something that I had been wanting to look at for some time, and did not realize that I could get my credit report free online with just a few clicks of the internet. In fact, the Fed requires that customers be able to look up this information for free, so Compass Bank was not really supplying an additional service. Because it was "free", however, I decided to go ahead and apply.

Although I signed the first page of the agreement, what I didn't realize was that on the second page lurked a clause intended to provide another non-service/service by stating that because I had signed up for the free credit report, Compass was going to count this signature as a de-facto agreement to cover me with Identity Theft, at $12.95 per month. The really tricky thing though was that no other notification that this charge (which I never actually read or authorized by signing BELOW) would be sent, and the charge would actually not be processed until 2 months after the credit report was to be sent. This would give any non-suspecting consumer who had even read the tiny-printed, hidden clause plenty of time to forget about the charge.

Because this was an account that I only used while abroad, it had a whole $2 of funding in it. So low and behold two months later when the $12.95 charge hit, not only did I receive that charge, but an additional $36 in overdraft fees. I had no idea who this mystery charge was from, because I hadn't used the account in over a year, and neither did the bank! When I called, the said they only showed a 1-800 number that I could call to find out who had charged me, and refused to take back the charge even though the business did not list their name, service provided, or any other information with the charge, which my local branch admitted was strange. I tried to follow instructions and called the 1-800 number to dispute the charge, and guess who it was...the very COMPASS BANK who had said they had no idea who had processed the charge!! Completely confused now, I was unsure where to turn. Little did I know at this point I could have just contacted 1-800-COMPASS and taken advantage of the 'overdraft forgiveness' that they provide to consumers once or twice for each account. Instead of being told this by the people I talked to, however, I was told to open up a dispute. I was also told this would take no more than 5-10 business days to process. Interestingly enough, it took 20 business days to still not hear a response, and I got charged another $12.95 plus another $36 overdraft fee. I was now $97.90 indebted to the bank for a service I never wanted or authorized which I had opened a dispute about, but they still charged me again. This time, I went into my local Cherry Creek, CO branch, where I was told after heated debate as to whether this was right that there was nothing they could do. I again called the customer service number, where only now was I notified that there is actually a thing called 'overdraft forgiveness'. At this point, it was too late for forgiveness of both overdraft fees, as apparently, I only got one. To be charged again for a fee that I didn't authorize in the first place, and had a dispute pending with my bank, and to be charged by that very bank was the most ridiculous event I had ever heard of! In addition, several times when I tried to get names from some of the agents on the phone, I was deliberately hung up on. One woman named Leticia in particular.

The only method of resolution the bank offerred now was to pay everything, close the account, and hope that the charges were reversed. So that's what I did, and the bank still made off with $36 of my hard-earned cash (3 hours of work because I was a poor student at the time). I even had to borrow the almost $100 to close the account from my parents, because otherwise I couldn't make the rent. The bank never cared, and I will never be a customer with them again. I will also continue to advocate for all friends and family of mine to sever any relationships with Compass Bank, and tell my story as often as possible. I'm sure that this has cost the bank far more than the $36 it unrightfully stole from me, and that is my only vindication. I now bank with only First Bank, Wells Fargo, and Diner's Club, who all have been amazing with their customer service. I advocate for all of you to never put up with companies like Compass Bank. They deserve to be out of business if their method of business is as unethical as trying to swindle/steal from their customers.

Making Deposits
The complaint I have is with only one branch of Compass Bank and thats the bank in Mobile, Al off of Bell Air Blvd. I do not bank with Compass Bank (thank God for I would be on this board everyday) but I have never heard of needing Proof of identification for making a straight deposit. No cash back, no inquirying of balance just making a deposit into my finacees account. I have called Compass Bank customer Complaint line and they have even said there should be no requirement of identification it is a straight deposit so my question is why just this one branch? If it wasnt for the fact this is the closest branch to our home I would never go to that branch. The reason why I make the deposits is because my finacee works 12 hours 7 days a week. If he does get a day off its the weekends, and lets be tuthful here if your work 7 12s if you get a day off you want to sleep. Today i went to the branch went through the drive through and she wouldn't deposit his check that he signed into his account for they needed my id, I'm sorry but I have this thing about sending in my ID to a institution that I don't even bank with, so I asked her to send it back and she told me all she needed was my id and I told her to just send it back and I would do it through the ATM, she retorted that I'm not allowed to do that and I looked at her and said what do you mean I'm not allowed to do that? Please someone tell me are they now going to guard and audit the ATMs. By the way my fiancee does have his work checks deposited so I would not have to deal with these issues but he also gets a per diem check that we deposit as well but it cant get direct deposited.
Does anyone else have issues with making straight deposits? Are you required to submit identification?

Deceptive trade practices!
I have been wanting my twelve year old daughter to open her first checking account. I received a direct mail piece announcing that first time people establishing checking accounts at Compass Bank would receive an IPOD. My daughter jump on the idea. The nest day we went to the compass bank branch and asked to open the account. I explained to the assistant branch manager I was usually skeptical about rebastre due to the amount of rebate fraud companies practice in the industry. He assured me that if the ipod was not sent the branch manager would go buy one with her corporate fund. As of today, we have never received an email or confirmation number nor ipod. Worse, the bank closed the account without any explanation and did not send back our full amount deposited in the account. I called to report this fraud and compass bank representatives have no explanation for the deceptive trade practices. I plan on filing suit on Monday.

Miss-lead!
Before I opened my account with Compass Bank a very simple question was asked and then this simple question was sent in a very detailed email by another co-worker of mine to verify. This question was simply "Do you clear charges before Deposits placed before 2:00pm" we were told "NO" well, guess what? I was lied to. On February 22nd, my husband went inside the bank around 10:00am and asked how much we had and made a deposit based on that. Well, at midnight they cleared pending charges before my deposit which keep in mind WE WERE TOLD THEY DO NOT DO THIS then the nsf fees ate up my deposit which then caused more fees from what I spent thinking I had money in the bank not having any idea it was eaten by NSF fees. The bank manager in Inverness Mary Asher says "we didn't clear charges before your deposit" I am stunned that she is still saying this. Yes, they do clear charges before your deposit. Then she says we clear them in the order they come in, however they clear them from highest to lowest... so which is it? you clear them the order they come in or in the order it is most convenient to you? I tried going higher up to get someone to listen to me about being miss-lead and I was told "I'm sorry we can not refund any fees" I said I was miss-lead or non of the fees would have happened then I was cut off and she says "I'm not interested in hearing what you have to say". This is not a professional way to handle any situation. I was not being irate. I was very calm and just explaining what had happened. This bank simply does not care about their clients.

Business is Business but at the end of the day we all go home to our families and I can go home to mine with a clear conscience. I would never miss lead someone in such a way that it could really cause so much grief in their lives and leave them in tears for days.

Fraud, beware!
We have just moved from NY, and opened an account with Compass Bank. My husband's pay check is directly deposited. Yesterday, I went into the bank and wanted to have 400.00 transfer to our other checking acct. The manager said I can write a check for cash and deposit it. To my surprise the check cause my acct to OD. I don't understand if the cash is available then how can this OD my acct? I am with anyone that want to bring a lawsuit to this bank. In all my banking years, I have never seen such ripoff. If you deposit cash, it is posted that night after charges... Compass the ripoff of all times.

Compass is Stealing Money from the Poor
I am disgusted and at a total loss. My mother-in-law, father-in-law, and their three grandchildren are being beaten down by Compass. They are missionaries in Mexico. They receive very limited funds to carry out their mission and maintain their living situation. Recently they went to an atm to pull out $500 to use as they needed for food and other living costs. The atm told them it could not dispense money at that time. To their horror they later found out the bank had debited the amount despite them not receiving any money at all. They contacted the bank, and as of now no one has come to the location to confirm the problem and on top of that they have charged them over $250 in overdraft fees. I know that since the location is in Mexico it may be difficult to do this, but they are CHARGING them while this is going on. These good people are being trampled on and kicked in the face by this heartless company. As I said they have very little money to begin with. This has thrown them into a very dangerous situation. Compass will not raise a finger to help them and is willing placing them in irreversible debt. My husband and I are sending them everything we can, but I have no idea what to do. I fear my family is sitting in a foreign country with little to now money and possibly running out of time. They will not recover from this is Compass keeps charging them to death. I need help and I have no idea where to go.

Poor service!
We worked about couple hours every day just to get the mailing address to mail a payment for our home equity line of credit. Can't find proper details incur online account. Cant find a statement for our home line of credit or an address where we can mail check for the payment. Calling customer services for more than 45 online holding for a person to answer, but no luck. this is the case for a long time. The work customer service I had ever had in the US.

I think this is causing so much inconvenience as we work all day and try to take care of our personal stuff after work; and Compass bank is making it impossible for us. Can't get a person to give us the address to mail a check.

Releasing personal info!
A representative from this bank called everyone on our street with a listed phone number and offered them a reward to get a message to me. They did this in regards to a vehicle loan i co-signed on even though both i and the owner of the vehicle have spoken with them regularly. Compass released personal information to people we don't even know. These people have come to me and let me hear messages that compass has left them... as many as 3 a day.

Being robbed!
Holding direct deposits pushing thru debits large debits first then small debits at 38$ each BEING ROBBED. Poor banking practices feel like I'm dealing with the dmv. They just don't care!
