They don't tell you of the hidden charges
I recently decided to take advantage of the massive promotion Vonage has going. When I called to setup my account I was told that I have 30 days to try the service with 100% money back guarantee, additionally I was told that it would take between 4-10 days to port the number and I should receive the adapter in 2-3 days. Lastly I have 30 days to try the service and would get 100% money back if not happy.
I didn't get the adapter until the 5th day and it took them 18 days to port my number. After the number was ported to Vonage no one could call me and I couldn't call anyone even though there was dial-tone. I call Vonage technical support multiple times to get this resolved with zero success. Within 6 days of trying the service I decided to not keep Vonage and called them to cancel the service. The support rep told me that if I don't port the number to another carrier they would give my number away to someone else (I've had the number for 10 years); so I decided to call another carrier and switched my number.
The new carrier took 10 days to port my number and as soon as my number ported to the new carrier Vonage reamed me with at $125.84 charge for canceling the service and charged me for the adapter for which I had already paid when I activated my account.
I explained to them that it took them 18 days to port my number and zero success in solving my problems while I was with them and asked them about their money back guarantee. Their response was you ported the number past 30 days of the trial period.
How does it make sense when it took them 18 days to port the number and I switched within 6 days of them taking over my number. They still refuse to refund my money.
Anyone looking to get Vonage should ABSOLUTELY NOT DO IT. Their advertisements are false and a way to trap customers. They don't tell you of the hidden charges even if you disconnect within 30 days.
I don't know how such business practices are legal and why the attorney generals don't shut them down.

Vonage customer service being penalized and it was there error
This company does not keep you in the know they where suppose to mail me to say if my phone number had been changed so that I could use my old number, but as I had not contacted them for the 30 days, they charged me 23.99 for not getting in touch with them, they where suppose to mail me to say that this had been done but upon calling them was told that I should of kept in touch with them, (and I though that I was the customer) as it was they never transferred my number, but as the person taking my order had written down my email incorrectly they said that they could not contact me so this was my fault and they have their policies. I would not recommend this company. The day I originally called to set up with them everything was fine and very helpful, the second day I called back realising that I needed my original number so I was going to cancel my arrangements not realising at the time I could keep my old number that is when the analyst told me no problem you can have your old number and we will mail you to let you know this has happened. No email came, I do not have time to sit an my PC looking for such mail, and time flies.

They will not give a refund
I attempted to cancel my 1 year paid in advance phone service with Vonage. After being told that there was a $39.99 cancellation fee, I was also advised that they would not refund a penny of the over $200 refund I was entitled to.
While I can almost understand this policy to weed out the people who try Vonage for a month or so & then leave, it seems counterproductive to penalize those of us who have had enough faith in them to let them have out money in advance. Yes there's a discount for prepaying but there's also a hidden risk.
Tell you friends...Vonage will keep it all, even if they don't deserve to.!!

complaint
I done thorough research on the area i live in when i decided to bundled internet and phone services. The cheapest was gonna be through Vonage. You must have High speed internet to have vonage. I did not at the time. I call customer service, they advised me the only HS internet in my area would be comcast. They transfered me to that dept. I had to wait for my account to be updated through comcast in order to have a phone. I was advised it could take 24-48 hours. No problem i understand. I continued to call (using a phone at work) and my account wasnt updated. After 3 weeks of spending an hour on the phone each time i called customer service i gave up. I got a cell phone and Broadband HS internet through us cellular, which i love. The winter months are here, i drive an hour to work thorugh the blue ridge mountains. I did not have time to continue to wait. I viewed my debit card transactions and seen vonage had taken out over $65. i called to let them know that i had not used the services. They had me to call back. So on my call back, i explained the issue. There was a 1yr contract and wants to charge $100 to cancel and will not refund any money due to the fact i didnt call within thirty days and they had been sending me emails. Well, um like i didnt have the internet. I feel as a courtesy the company should at least waive the cancellation fee. I advised they were not authorized to take out the cancellation fee. Because of this i have to go through my debit card company to advised my card has been comprimised. On the call they advised me that it didnt matter what internet i had, that i could just hook up the equipment and use the phone. thats not what the vonage represenatives told me. It is bad for business and now if i ever did go with a home phone or know anyone looking for services i will not advise them to use vonage.

Avoid like a plague
Buyer Beware!! I've just canceled my Vonage service which I haven't used. I paid $50 for the activation fee that's after the "first month free" advertised back in Dec 2008. And I have been paying the $28.77 for 2 months after that. Now that I want to disconnect the line. They're charging me $110. Why? Cause the representative says she has to charge the $39.99 disconnect fee AND the "applicable recovery fee on section 8.8 from the TOS" which equals to the $70 rebate they gave me on the modem. I offered to return the modem, but they don't want it back. I've read many many complaints about Vonage (only after signing up to their service, stupid me!) and realized I was in for a painful scam. I was ready for the $39.99 mentioned everywhere but not the $70 for "recovery fee" which the representative admits could be anything, depending on what they give as promo to signing up the service. So buyer beware! The cheaper you think you're getting from Vonage, you'll pay it ALL back when you want to part ways with them!

Unauthorized use of credit card
After almost 4 years of spotty and poor service we finally switched to our cable provider for phone service. I never paid a bill late for Vonage and was fully paid up for January when I terminated the account with them in the beginning of the month. I was informed on the phone by an operator that I was going to be charged $85.00 for "early" termination fee. What is early about nearly four years? I insisted on the phone that they were "NOT Authorized" to charge my credit card however they did it anyway, immediately. I filed a dispute with Visa but Vonage simply told them that the charge was legitimate and they accepted it. No documentation or contract. They simply stole $85 from me.

Scam
I had been a customer of Vonage since 2004 and called to cancel my account as the charges had gone from $9.99 a month to $23 a month without any notice. I also discovered Skype could offer better service at a much reduced price. The customer service person offered to reduce my rate again which was great, but told them I still was not interested. I had to request 5 times to have my account canceled and the person then tried to essentially tell me I was stupid for switching since it isn't a real service. It is also very frustrating since the call center is based on India and they have difficulty understanding what they are being told. They also would not refund my month fees unless I called a different number and started all over again. Really huge pain... beware.

Rip Off
Vonage cost me hundreds and I never once made nor received a call with the company.
I signed up for Vonage under the conditions that I would have uninterrupted phone, internet, and fax service. My service was never hooked up or useable because I had to have a cable line and not a satallite--this should have been told to me when I first inquired about their service and now my current internet and phone provider was cut off, and I was charged a cancellation fee. Over the course of four months I was strung along with no service, but promises that everything would be alright...and they continued to draw a 40.00 monthly fee for service that I never had or used. Then when I finally got someone on the phone that I could understand (that spoke English) I was charged a 200.00 disconnect fee. I NEVER HAD A CONNECTION!!!

Awful service
After being a satisfied customer for over 2 years I decided to cancel as I no longer was using the service. The first time I called to cancel, after spending over 30 minutes repeating my desire to cancel and dealing with scripted "required" Q&A sessions, I though I was done. No. Vonage conveniently forgot to record the cancellation and I had to do it all over again a month later after I was billed again. The second time I got a transaction number and names. Next time I need VOIP service it definitely won't be with Vonage.

Nightmare
We got Vonage to try out Voip. What we got instead was a nightmare that haunted us for over a year. Vonage service didn't even work for us and when we tried to cancel their service we had to wait over FORTY minutes THREE separate times to finally get a hold of someone who didn't direct us to their sales department. They wanted a HUGE cancellation fee for something we could never use in the first place. They wouldn't stop billing us for over a year even though we were NEVER ABLE TO USE THEIR SERVICE. AVOID VONAGE!
