TCF Bank Reviews

Funds availability, overdrafts and fees
In their promotional material, TCF says "Tell your friends about the confidence you have in us." So, I will.

On Sept. 28 I opened an account at the TCF branch in my local Jewel. I wanted a separate account for my business travel expenses and the location was convenient. Opened the account with a $1500 expense check I'd received from my local employer (drawn on a local bank). On October 7 (9 days after opening account: 7 business days) I do an electronic funds transfer for $1200to pay my Amex bill -- and TCF bounces it and charges me $35!

I got nothing but blank stares at my local branch and nobody had a reasonable explanation other than "sometimes it takes longer for new account deposits to clear". Well, that's not my opinion of how you treat a new customer -- and it's probably a preview of more surprises to come -- so I closed my account.

As they suggested, I will gladly "tell me friends" that they should never do business with TCF Bank!

Sneaky banking policies
TCF debit card policy is to pay all transactions regardless of existing customer balances. You must request and sign a special OP-OUT form for them not to do this. Secondly, they apply all of their debits and then credits each day - not as they occur. Therefore, if your account goes negitive during the application of debits - you are charged an overdraft fee.

Bad banking
2 weeks ago my husband and I closed our checking account because we moved out of the area and there were no branches around our new location. We changed our direct deposit from our works, however my husband's didn't get in on time so it still went to our old account at TCF Bank. Instead of sending it back, the bank re-opened our old account and deposited the money without mine or my husbands permission. We had no idea. We had to drive 50 miles to the nearest branch to get the money and to re-close the account. What makes them think they can just re-open an account that we closed without us knowing.

robbers
these people really do need to be brought up on charges for this scam of robbing people of their money with overdraft fees and for taking your money to pay for other transactions. example I paid for an item on the 23 of sept. with my card $25 a $7 on the 24 and $13 on the 25 with a balance of $148 and each day I call to check my balance and on the 25 a $51 charge was made and my balance was $66 - that from 51 leave +$15 so I call sat 26 to hear my balance is -$31 what the fuck is this I call to have them to tell me that because of tha $51 I overdraft and because there was pending charges the $47 in card purchases which was tooking out already wasnt tooking out it was put to the side this bank no matter what they take the biggest charge and pay them first regardless if U paid for the item three dayz later that's why it takes three day because they sit back and wait on other charges to come through hoping it's bigger than the last item U paid for within the three day

Hold on cash deposit
I recently deposited $800 CASH (this is key) into my local TCF banks ATM (also key). The transaction occured on a tuesday afternoon at 3pm. On Wednesday I made a purchase and also had a cell phone bill automatically deducted from my account. When I went to an ATM the same day to withdraw $20 dollars I owed a friend, I was told I had insufficient funds. The purchase earlier in the day and the cell phone bill amounted to less than $100. I went inside the branch to see what the problem was. I was told I missed the Tuesday cut-off for deposits of 2pm. "Is that the only time you make deposits?" I asked. "No, we also make them at 8am when we open for business." OK? So why was the cash deposit not cleared then? Apparently buried in the fine print of TCF's checking account agreement is a note that treats all cash deposits made at an ATM like a check, requiring a two day hold period. My $800 CASH deposit made on Tuesday was not made available until Thursday and in the mean time I was charged $70 ($35 per occurance) for the transactions made on Wednesday. YES, THERE WAS A 2-DAY HOLD PUT ON MY CASH DEPOSIT THAT COST ME $70. Needless to say, after all funds cleared, I closed my TCF checking account and took my business elsewhere.

Overdraft me when I had money on my Savings
Hello everyone I have problems with this bank too they lied to me I was only going to open a Checking Account and they lied to me to open up a savings so it would cover me with Insuficient funds they told me it would automaticly would tranfer my savings to checking to protect me from Overdraft. I had 43. 00 and I only use 5.05 and the 25.00 dollars I had in my Savings is still there with a 70.00 dollar Overdraft on my Checkins. If they wouldnt of lied to me to open up a savings and what it would help me with I would of just pulled money out of the bank in person I got gas across the street from tcf with my debit. this people suck. I reported it to th ATTORNEY GENERAL AND GAVE HER THIS LINK SO SHE CAN SEE. how many people are complaining about this bank

they love taking your money
TCF loves to take your money! I have many many stories I can tell about this bank like for instance how we went to an ATM to withdraw money for rent and the ATM jammed and only gave us $60 and rent was due that day! We called the bank and said we need this money now to pay our rent or else were going to have a butt load of fees from our apartments for being late. They wouldn't help us at all and told us it could be 3 months before we get our money back!! We asked since it was a TCF atm error if we could just take the money out to pay rent and them not charge us NSF fees since it was their fault and they refused! Thankfully our apartments worked with us and took off the late fees. Our biggest problem is they re arrange all the transactions so that if you do go over once they instead of charging you for the most recent one charge they re arrange all of them so you get charged for as many as they can get. We had a check go through that wasn't supposed to go through till the next day and should've only been charged for one fee they re arranged transactions that were made 5 days before so we got charged for three! This bank is so ridiculous they just love screwing people over and taking as much money as they can. This is the worst bank we have have been through, it's horrible how they treat their customers.

overdraft fees
Overdraft fees--my account was $20 short--the $35.00 fee caused other over draftver fees resulting in $170 in OD fees. Brancg managers do not assist but direct you to customer service - no personal service. I was told to go to a branch I do not bank with to discuss setting up OD protection. I went to US Bank and moved my four business accounts there. They sent a representative to my business to set up the accounts with OD protection. I have had a lot of OD fee that could have been avoided if the branch managers would work with you on setting up OD protection.

The tellers are great--but the policies are terrible---gouge the customers seems to be their tactic of operation.

Overdraft Fees and Closed Account
My husband and I received a letter in the mail one weekend stating that there was unusual activity related to our account and the letter suggested that we call TCF. My husband proceeded to call and was told that there was a charge to our account of $500 dollars of overdraft fees due to 15 checks that they had paid on our behalf. My husband asked the customer service rep over the phone if there was anything that could be done and the CSR told him she could do a 1 time adjustment / credit of $174.00 but that still left us with a huge debt. When we asked the CSR to tell us what happened, she told us that my husband's payroll check was pending and that it had not been credited yet but they ran the charges first before posting his payroll. What a way to rip off clients of their hard earned $$. This happened again several weeks later when their online stated I had a certain amount so I went by that and lo and behold I got another $140.00 of NSF fees. When I went in and asked the lady what this was about she said that 4 items had been paid hence the NSF fees. I told the lady that the on line banking information said that I had enough $$ to cover those items. She then continues to tell me that items fall on and off, ie one day you run your on line statement and it may show it pending. So the next day it doesn't show up so you figure it's paid. But no, the next day it pops up again. I asked her to tell me how this is possible but she said she couldn't explain it that it just happens. I'm sorry but the people at the Roseville branch are IDIOTS!!! I finally closed my account with them after 2 rip offs. I always heard people say they hated TCF and I never knew why, now i do...
