Deceptive and Unfair Business Practices
They charge NSF fees on transactions that haven't even posted to your account since pending transactions take away from your available balance. This is unfair simply because many merchants use credit card numbers such as car rental places for reservations before the card is charge. However, in order for the merchant to make sure your card is valid, they have to run it. This in turn ties up usually $1.00 of your money but drops off when the authorization runs out. Therefore, how can TCF charge 35.00 NSF fees on pending transactions that have not even posted? I ended up with 3 35.00 NSF fees because of pending transactions that had not even posted yet.

Deceptive Practices
I would like to inform everyone that TCF uses deceptive practices to increase their fee revenue. We have had a "totally free" checking account with TCF for years. In Jan TCF put a notice in our statement (written in very small font) in a section they normally reserve for advertising informing us they would start charging fees for accounts that do not maintain a min balance. We normally do not check our statements often as we have low activity in that account and were surprised to find they had charged us fees (of course our luck we were keeping a low balance at the time).
It was clear to us that TCF Bank's intent was to deceive consumers by posting the notice in a way that customers would miss the notification in an effort to increase their fee revenue. This borderlines on fraud. If a company plans to materially change the terms of an agreement, it's normal practice to inform the other party in a seperate written letter to clearly explain the change. In some industries this is the law and I'm surprised it's not in the banking industry. Customer service didn't seem to care and quoted "we receive complaints about everything all the time". That doesn't surprise me in the least bit. I'm glad they are open 7 days a week so I can close my accounts there as soon as possible.

Monthly fees
Due to an emergency I had to go out east for a couple months, where I was informed that my TCF account was negative. Upon talking to the customer service line they informed me that even though I had signed a contract for a FREE checking account, they were able to change the contract at any time. I advised them that I had notification of any changes and had been out of state. The customer service line refused to take off any of the fees and told me that TCF was able to change anything they wanted to. They further told me that it would be 2 days before receiving any call back from a supervisor. The customer service service line told me that they had mailed out notification which I had never received-they were unhelpful in solving any problems and said that I would have to deposit more money into the account. DO NOT BANK WITH TCF-they steal your money.

No alrets for fee increases
This bank recently started charging for previously free checking accounts. Guess what? They did not inform us customers. I'm a student struggling to survive and right around exam time, I get this fee increase for not having a direct deposit? What the heck? As a student I got slammed for-a) not having a direct deposit {I don't have a job duh!) b) for not having a minimum $100.00 in my account {once again, I'm a student duh!)
Espcially for students, this bank really sucks. They wouldn't even let me call their call center from their office...said I should go use a public phone if I wanted to speak with the manager.
I TOOK MY BUSINESS ELSEWHERE!

Scam
I had a $0.71 (yes, 2 quarters, 2 dimes, and a penny) payment due to paypal, and they attempted to take the $0.71 from my account not once but 6 times!!! (Paypal is my next complaint). Instead of TCF paying the pety $0.71, and charging me a one time $35 fee they declined the payment and allowed Paypal to continue to try taking the funds 6 times, and charged me $35 every time!!! This is all over less then a $1.00. I'm so mad, and will be putting my complaint anywhere, and everywhere I possibly can!!

Gouging fees ( fees on top of fees)
I started a personal checking account with TCF about a year ago and with the monthly checks I was depositing and paying bills with, transactions went fine, with an occassional overdraft fee or two. Then after about 6 months or so, I got charged more overdraft fees which I thought was unusual but keep feeding money to the account assuming I must have overdrawn with my regular bills being paid (I do not have overdraft protection as they forgot to offer me then when I originally opened the account, plus I am disabled on serious medication so I assumed that they are being honest). Over the next 3-6 months, I had put in about $1500-$1800 extra and yet I kept getting checks I paid for bounced (which the money I put in was more than enough to cover the regular bills and more!).

All of a sudden, I owed TCF Bank over $600 which considering I had no overdraft protection and my checks were being bounced when they should had been paid and I thought I had more than enough money to cover my bills.

I complained to the TCF Bank and they (tellers and one manager) told me they could only reverse 2 fees per every six months, sorry cannot help.
I asked for a printout of all transactions and found out that TCF bank had charged fees on top of fees and the extra money I deposited had all mostly gone towards paying their fees instead of my bills. So I froze the account which I was told would stop all transaction and fees being added. By this time, the fees owing was almost $700.

I kept getting threatening letters to hand my account to Collections if I do not make my account balanced to 0 or positive! I complained to BBB which TFC did not bother to respond, and sent my account to collection. Now they claimed I owe them over $1400!

This is illegal and TCF is draining people of money and their claims of $50 free if you start an account with them is just a bait to get your money!

Please help me, and also warn other people to be aware and spread the word of TCF Bank gouging policies. .

Thank you.

online banking
TCF bank signed me up for online bank statement without my knowledge. Customer service claimed that when I signed up for online bill pay that I was automatically signed up to receive online bank statement. However today after having the service for over 6 months I was notified that I had to save or download my account information in order to receive statment. which would violate my right to privacy. I was told that I had to dissenroll my self in order to receive a bank statement in the mail. Customer service reps are sometime predjudice also.

fradulent Activity
I am currently having SO many issues with this bank that I refuse to not speak about it anymore. THis is a warning to anyone thinking of opening an account with TCF bank!!!
FOr the last several months, a day or so after each payday which is a direct deposit, I start accruing fees up the wazoo! They normally total aroung $180 or more. I call and spend hours on the phone which usually results in a headache and only a small percentage of the fees returned to my account.
Specifically, my check went into my account overnight and the next afternoon I withdrew money from the ATM. That very next day I was charged a bounce fee on that cash withdrawl and due to that fee two small debit charges, under $10 each, also bounced causing more charges to the account causing it to go futher in the negative. When I spoke to the local branch manager they had no explanation so I called the regional manager and I was told that TCF's policy is to always give the customer what they request even if it causes a negative balance, when using a ATM for withdrawl. I told him I wanted the fees reversed and he said he couldn't do that. Some policy!
ALSO, last month I made a CASH deposit at my local branch before 11:00 am. I then went grocery shopping the next day and got gas in the car, normal stuff. Two days later I check my account and everything I did had bounced and my deposit showed up as being done a day later than I actually did it. I called, they told me that I was wrong about when i made my deposit, I went up to the branch with my reciept to prove when I made the deposit and they told me that the clerk that records the daily deposit must have done so AFTER the correct time so my deposit showed up the next business day. I was livid!!! They would only reverse half of the fees!! Also, no apologies were offered for their behaivor or for telling me I was wrong or for the teller hanging up on me.
Also, each time I have called and asked why they do this, change deposit days, change transactions days, screw me over, they explain to me that they are not changing the transaction or deposit days that those actions are done by the federal reserve!?! Are they serious? Why would the federal reserve be changing when the transaction from my local grocer comes out of my account.
This bank is extremely two-faced and is doing everything they can to take as many fees as possible from every person who banks there. I honestly believe that this is fradulent behaivor and wish there was a class-action suit against them. I'd actually sign my name to that just becuase I am soooo angry!!!

Worst bank, EVER
This bank is by far the worst bank. They actually STEAL from you. I cannot even tell you how many phones calls I've made to customer service and how many hours I spent on the phone wth them. They held my first deposited check for 10 days before I could touch it which put me behind in some bills, that irritated me but I decided to give them a shot. After that, my account was always in the negative and I could not figure out why. I had over draft charges on the first thing that I purchased. I kept calling I spent hours on the phone with them to find out that they put a hold on all of your transactions, THEN re-charge you and if your account is low (like a lot of peoples are right now) that first transaction causes you to go into the negative which makes every purchase after that go into the negative. They then clear the re-charge. I balance my checkbook and I not once should have ever gone over but I dealt with it and paid the fees until the lady I called told me that. After that I paid the last fee I only kept 30 in my account and made a point to NOT use my card and sure enough I was charged a ridiculous charge again that I refuse to pay, they then charged me more fees so I closed my account and told the lady I wont be paying something I didnt even touch, a month later I got a collection notice for $150 when I had money in there but never used it. You have got to be kidding me. I AM LIVID!!!
