Overdraft Fees
If I have to pay overdraft charges, then it is because *I allowed it to happen, and I have. Why would anyone complain about over draft charges when they let it happen? Granted there are times when things can slip in on us and cause an over draft; but I have found that if your account is normally in good standings; TCF will reverse the charges.

FRAUD
I CONTACTED tcf bank WITwhom I have had an account with for over 10 years and have always been in GREAT standings and have enjoyed my services. I had a family member steal my checkbook and wrote 1000.00 in bad checks and I called them right away. I have beentreated HORRIBLEY!! They closed the account in which fraud was done and I totally agree with that. I opened another one and the instantly CLOSED it. I opened it with an itital deposit of 125.00 and TCF took it and closed it as I mentioned. I have no banking services available to me AT ALL. I am being TREATED like a criminial. I have paid all but 318.00 to avoid the bad credits that will follow until the investagation can be conducted. I called to make a payment to them over the phone - they refused. They actually cleared ALL 10 checks that my family memer wrote ALL one day and cleared checks for her that I didnt even have money in my checking account to cover. They CLAIM they did this as a courtesey !! When, I call them the tone they talk to me with is not nice. I went in to TCF BANK .com to set up YET another account and I made a deposit of 350.00 knowing they will take it. I am a proud women and I have money, and I am trying to pay the bank until all this is investagated and they continue to treat me like a CRIMINAL. I am calling corporate office. I dont agree with them shutting my new account down . I have no way of banking. Its wrong what they do to us.

Violation of privacy
TCF is heartless! We are going through a difficult time financially and need to sell our home. After being denied by TCF to refinance and get out of a horrible interest only loan, they are now making it very difficult for us to sell our home. The guys in the collections office have made assumptions about our character, and even posted our social security #'s on our front door for the world to see. Talk about a total violation of privacy! DO NOT TRUST THIS BANK! Their business practices are pathetic.

OverDraft fees
While reviewing my TCF Bank account, I had noticed a new fee that was showing up on my transactions list entitled, "Monthly Maintenance Fee". When I opened an account with TCF Bank, I was notified that it was their "Totally Free Checking Account", due to me being a student at NIU (and if I were to have any convenience with banking on campus, i was notified that the only ATMs and the banks on campus were TCF).
The first "Service Charge" took place on March 17, 2010 - SEVEN months after I had opened my account. I hadn't checked my online banking as much as I probably should have in order to notice that this was going on. The only time I noticed this was when I went to review my account after making a purchase at the local Wal-Mart in Sycamore, IL on March 18, 2010. I remember specifically because I had used some of the money that was recently deposited into my account earlier that week for medication because I was ill - and I had wanted to see how much money I had left over after making a second purchase that week.
After seeing this service fee was implemented on my account, and not noticing anything like this previously on my account, I called the customer service number and asked them what was going on. To paraphrase, the lady I had spoken to notified me that this was an irreversible fee, and it was because my account had changed according to them, that month - she told me to look in my messages to see that my account type was changed. I followed her instructions, and I did not receive ANY notifications of any sort - mail, email, etc.- that my account type had been changed. The lady also stated that, because I did not have $500 in my account, that is why I was being charged this (I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT- which equals to NO MONEY). This is my first complaint.
My second complaint complies of simply the dates the "Service Fees" were made. The first one dated - March 17, 2010, the second one dated - April 16, 2010 (a day before the first charge was made), and the third dated - May 18, 2010 (two days after the month time period would be sort of remotely acceptable (if the charge was acceptable in the first place). The timeliness of this bank is completely absurd and unpredictable. According to their logic, I am just supposed to "know" when they decided to take the money out of my account, and not go over, even though I barely had any money in the first place.
Sortly after this, I had refused to use my TCF account for anything else - and I am assuming the bank took the hint since they closed my account, and sent the money that they caused me in overdraft fees due to their own untimely will. I owe, I believe $90.00 in total due to just their fees. Thank you TCF Bank for doing nothing, but causing me stress and anxiety.

TCF BANK IS FRAUD

4.95 service fee
STAY AWAY! I was charged two 4.95 service fee for not keeping a minimum balance in my account when I was never told that this was the case. I was toldy by the Elmhurst branch located in JEWEL that there was no minimum balance only to be told by the location in McHenry that there is a certain balance. Leads me to beleive that the tellers of the bank are not being trained very well. To clear this up I deposited 800 dollars into the account only to find that I was charged another service fee. This bank is a fraud and really reminds me of the idea that if something is too good to be true in life it proably is. Take my recomendation and stay away!

Fees and Scams
This bank is terrible. I set up a simple student checking account back when I go my first job. They convienently leave out all of their ridiculous charges and fees when you sign up. They told me that if I set up direct deposit that I wouldn't be charged any fees and yet every month I am charged at least two fees. They also will save transactions and then when you are getting low on the money you are keeping with them, a three week old transaction appears out of nowhere, saying it just went through. Today is Dec. 11 and I have been trying to close out my account for three weeks now bc I put my money in a Chase account (great bank so far) and a transaction from Nov 26 just went through and I have numerous 2 week old transactions still pending. It's a scam to try to get you to overdraft. This bank is terrible and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Stay away from the stress and scams of TCF bank.

Theft
We've all heard the term "Bank Robbers" before, but TCF Bank has taken that term on LITERALLY! They are boldly and unjustly stealing from the hardworking individuals who have trusted them to "Bank" their money! The will hold as many transactions pending when a persons balance is low, and wait for the moment they overdraft by more than a dollar, and BAM post every single transaction that's within the 3-5 allowed business days. Not only do they post it conveniently after you've overdrawn, but then they will hit you with with a $35 on each and every pending transaction within the allotted 3-5 business days! That is complete bullshit! You mean to tell me for a total of 15 dollars, you are going to charge in the upwards of $210 in overdraft fees? You must be insane. I can tell you this much, after this last stint with TCF, I can proudly say that I will NOOOOO longer be entrusting my money with Americas common day theif! TCF KISS MY ASS!!!

I am set up for direct deposit with TCF BANK. Even though I have direct deposit, I still have to wait 2 days for my paycheck funds to become available.

Unauthorized Account Changes
TCF bank, prior to new laws being passed in regards to bank practices, changed the account agreements of members, including me. The new agreement forces customers to pay the account fee if the balance is less than 500.00 dollars, even though I have opened my account long ago and it was TOTALLY FREE CHECKING, without such fees. It is clear, that the bank is engaged in such practices to victimized those who got stuck with TCF bank and are unable to open the account elsewhere. The fee is 10 dollars per month just to have the account open. TCF BANK also is fraudulent in charging online baking fees even though they advertise with adds online and in store stating "Totally free banking".
This is deceptive and requires attorney's general investigation in the headquarters of the bank's state. I have tried to discuss this matter with many reps, who state that they are unable to make any changes to account - they are unable to reverse the account to being free and without fees as the original agreement stated. I do not have the agreement, who dates back almost 10 years, but I am pretty sure they did not include a clause stating that they could suddenly make changes to the account to start charging customers. They did not warn the customers in advance, thus, making it impossible to increase the account balance to the required 500.00 or more.

TCF Bank hates their customers
TCF Bank hates their customers!
It is surprising to me that during this time of a difficult economy and many people struggling to get by that a Bank like TCF Bank would not see to it that they would try to do their best to take care of their customers.
The last year has been a very difficult one financially for me and I am doing everything I can to make it by. $175.00 may not seem like much money to most but it is the difference in making the rent or not for me. TCF Bank does not care about that. All they care about is their policy.
I recently had a situation where money was mistakenly taken from my account. It was because of an issue that was not quickly corrected by the courts. When I found out that this was happening I was able to get it corrected within 24 hours and TCF Bank put the money back into my account within that time frame.
That was great and a quick turnaround of getting the money back once they got the corrected information.
During this 24 hour process I was in communication with the branch trying to make sure what needed to be done and how to get the problem resolved and how to avoid any NSF fees. Nothing was ever said to me about there being a potential problem with NSF fees and how it could be corrected.
However because of the money being taken out it caused $175.00 in over draft fees. Over draft fees that really never should have happened and that TCF Bank will not refund. TCF Bank says that technically it wasn’t a mistake by them so they should not refund the money. I agree technically it was not their mistake. However, they could do the right thing for their customer and refund the money.
I have talked to their customer service and to the branch manager to no avail. It was not their fault so they do not have to return the money.
What happened to doing the right thing for the customer especially given these economic times, especially when the customer is begging them to do it. Why can't they look past their policy and consider their customer. It really is an unfortunate that they will not do that.
I hope that TCF Bank will get this letter and recognize that there are times when they need to be more concerned about doing what is right and less concerned about their policy.
